OBJECTIVES

1. Demonstrate comprehensive cognitive competency in the

following subject areas, within the scope of general surgery:

1.1 Fluids and electrolytes and acid-base management in

the surgical patients

1.2 Shock and resuscitation

1.3 Surgical nutrition

1.4 Endocrine and metabolic response to injury

1.5 Wound healing and wound care

1.6 Bleeding and blood transfusion

1.7 Burns

1.8 Surgical oncology

1.9 Trauma - general principles of management; approach

and principles of management of trauma to the

abdomen, chest, head (craniocerebral) and neck,

skin, soft tissue and extremities

1.1O Surgical infection

1.11 Principles of immunology and transplantation

1.12 Head and neck tumors

1.13 Surgical disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid

1.14 Surgical disorders of the esophagus

1.15 Surgical disorders of the stomach and duodenum

1.16 Acute surgical abdomen and acute appendicitis

1.17 Surgical disorders of the liver, gallbladder and

biliary tree (including portal hypertension)

presenting with

2.4 Upper GI bleeding (hematemesis and melena)

2.5 Lower GI bleeding (hematochezia)

2.6 Jaundice

2.7 Abdominal and groin mass

2.8 Intestinal obstruction

2.9 Soft tissue swelling and infection

2.1O Shock

2.11 Acute injury (to head and neck, chest, abdomen,

extremities and combined multiple injuries)

3. Accurately interpret the following common laboratory and

diagnostic procedures (normal and abnormal) used in the clinical

evaluation and management of surgical patients:

3.1 CBC

3.2 Blood chemistry (FBS, BUN, Cr, Na, K, Cl, Liver

function tests)

3.3 Urinalysis

3.4 Fecalysis

3.5 Arterial blood gases

3.6 Plain radiographs

- Chest

- Plain abdomen and KUB

- Skull

- Extremities (for common fractures)

3.7 Constrast studies

- Upper GI Series

- Barium enema

- IVP

- Cholangiography

3.8 Ultrasonography of the gallbladder

3.9 Rigid proctosigmoidoscopy

3.1O Indirect laryngoscopy

4. Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the principles

of the following diagnostic procedures:

4.1 Fiberoptic endoscopy (direct laryngoscopy,

esophagogastroscopy, colonoscopy, choledochoscopy,

bronchoscopy)

4.2 Ultrasonography of other organs and tissues

4.3 CT scan

4.4 Use of radioisotopes

4.5 Laparoscopy
