01. Old New Media Icon

Micha Klein (Harderwijk, March 21, 1964) is a Dutch computer artist / video artist.

Klein was born as the son of a sculptor. He attended secondary school at the Christian College Nassau-Veluwe. He then studied at the Rietveld Academy and started experimenting with computer graphics during his studies. Initially in a loft of the Rietveld Academy, where a Commodore Amiga stood that nobody used. Later at a photo lab where he had a part-time job, and where there was a very expensive Quantel Paintbox that he could use in lost hours. After graduating on computer-generated slides and a 16-minute computer video with a very basic house track, Klein quickly bought a Silicon Graphics computer, the first Dutch artist.

He became video jockey (VJ) in the early 1990s house scene . He also organized parties himself. In 1993 Pillman appeared for the first time , an icon of Klein, which would later be used by the rapper Eminem in a video clip (2000). In addition to this free work, he also designed advertising material and CD covers. Klein made animations for two Coca-Cola commercials, and for the film Around the World in 80 Days by Frank Coraci where they form a connecting element between the different locations in the film.

Besides his work as VJ Klein is known as a designer of Swatch - watches and NESCAFÉ Special edition coffee for work (2009). In 1998 he had an overview exhibition at the Groninger Museum.

Why I like him?

He used state-of-the-art graphic computers like Amiga and Quantel Paintbox at a very early stage. He created a lot of different kinds of art like the Pillman and Photographic collages. He brought the house music scene into the museums.
