1.1 Icon: Ernesto Sábato

Ernesto Sabato (1911 – 2011) was an Argentinian writer consider to be one of the most influential writers in Hispanic Literature. It may seem strange to present a writer as a media artist. However, I believe that there is an inherently artistry and creativity involved in writing a good book. And since a book is most certainly a medium, it is only fitting to call a writer a media artist.

His works are composed by three novels: “El Túnel” (1948), “Sobre héroes y tumbas” (1961) and “Abaddón el exterminador” (1974) and multiple essays, the msotknown being: “Uno y el Universo”, “Hombres y engranajes” and “El escritor y sus fantasmas”. Though his life, his rhetorical ability led him to win multiple international awards such as The Legion of Honour, and the Miguel de Cervantes. However, for me his importance lays in the much simpler fact that he wrote, what I consider till this date, my favorite book. Although being the first novel he wrote, “El Túnel” profoundly impacted the way I thought about the world and the way I conceptualize my existence in relationship to others. “El Túnel” is a book which succeeds in conveying the unspeakable feeling of profound loneliness and the hardship and inability to connect to others.
