1 Icon: Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh, 6 aug 1928 – New York, 22 feb 1987)

Born in Pittsburgh in 1928 as Andrew Warhola, he moved to New York in 1949 to pursue a career as a commercial artist. Warhol became one of the most successful commercial artists of the 1950s and was distinguished for his characteristic style.

He is known for his bright, colorful paintings and prints of subjects ranging from celebrities (including Marilyn Monroe and Mohammed Ali), to everyday products such as cans of soup and Brillo pads.

What I like about Andy Warhol is that he was a collaborator. He accompanied, adding on to the original creation of others, yet providing something new and fresh ideas. He used everyday products to inspire him and danced to his own drum. Essentially, he said that anything if intended and presented as art, can be deemed to be art. I like the fact that he was extremely influential and original, and, above all, that he challenged the idea of what art is, sparking up much discussion about this from his time till today.
