1.1 Icon: Studio Drift

My icon is not so much a person as it is a company of people: Studio Drift.

What I like about their art and installations is the fact that they push the line between technology and nature in such a way that both come out better than before. They show, in a special manner, the fragile relationship between humanity, technology and nature and that we as a collective are responsible for its future.

A good example of this is Drifter (2017). The trailer for Drifter is as bombastic as the art piece itself and it baffles the human mind, all the while playing with natural themes like perception and human impact on nature.

In the installation, a concrete brick flies through the studio, unknown by what force it is driven. The brick can be seen as an entity aiming for its destiny. The question Studio Drift asks about this is: Can the individual escape the collective?

Newly enthralled by this view on society (the one vs. the many) - inspired by a presentation on swarm intelligence - it seemed fitting to choose this group of individuals creating art.

I find the relationship between the individual and the collective an interesting one and I believe it can explore many subjects in a broad range. You could almost call it applicable for every kind of situation.
