011 ICON - Rosa Menkman

Rosa Menkman (Arnhem, 1983) is a Dutch media artist, researcher and curator. Her work is focused on exploring and pushing the boundaries of the both the digital and analogue medium, often operating there where the medium breaks. Menkman is known for her Glitch Art and studies into Resolution and Format protocols. I personally think her best works are "A Vernacular of File Formats" (2011) and "The Collapse of PAL" (2010), both homages to that what is lost as explorations of how an outdated medium would function under modern digital protocols.

A Vernacular of File Formats (Rosa Menkman, 2011)

The Collapse of PAL (Rosa Menkman, 2010)

What I find intriguing are Menkman's methods: she turns deconstruction into a powerful tool to make the invisible visible, exposing hidden structures and behaviours of a medium. Her work often has a dystopian, frictionous feel, portraying anti-images of digital artefacts. With this, she poses very critical questions on how these media operate, what goes below their surface, and what this means for mankind when these media are exposed and integrated in our every day life.

Those are the questions, if you ask me.
