2 Letter Commending Lt JW Laurie

Letter from Colonel J.J.Hunt, 36th Regiment

to John Wimburn Laurie

London, November 25th 1865

My dear Laurie

I have received your letter and in reply have much pleasure in certifying that I was well acquainted with you throughout the period of your services in the 4th, the Kings Own Regiment in the Crimea from the 8th Novr. 1854 until the cessation of hostilities, and that I know that you were most zealous and attentive to your duties in every respect.

I particularly recollect the affairs on 22nd Novr. 1854 when you were detached in front of the Ovens with a small party of the regiment under the command of Lieutt. (now Major) Robertson, when our trenches communicated with those of the French and in which the Russians were successfully and permanently repulsed by us, and that Col. Cobbe most highly approved of your conduct on this occasion.

I have the less hesitation in certifying to this as I am the senior officer now left in the service who was present with the King’s Own Regiment in the Crimea at the time, and know what Col Cobbe’s opinion was and I am quite sure that if he were alive now instead of having died of his wounds, poor fellow, that he would be most happy to give you a testimonial to the same effect as this.

Believe me,

Sincerely yours,

(Signed) John J. Hunt, Colonel

Lt. Col. Commanding 36th Regiment

Late Lt. Col. 4th K.O.Regt.
