On board the Ship

War Spirit, off Holyhead

Wednesday July 4th/55

¼ past 12 a.m

Dear Mother

I am going to send you a letter by the Pilot.

We started last night at 2 o’clock being tugged out & as it fell calm we did not send the tug back but I believe will keep it as long as it is necessary. I think when we get to Holyhead we shall find the wind favourable but at present it is right against us.

I do not think that any one on board has been seasick at present, the water is so smooth.

I have got a bath at last & I was so tired last night that the moving of the ship did not wake me & I was much surprised this morning when I got up to find that we were out of sight of land. I suppose we shall be about three weeks at sea.

Will you send me some papers with the Gazette in, on to Malta, as I am very anxious to see if there is any promotion for me.

There is nothing to be done but Smoke, Read, & Eat & now & then let a line down astern but the ship is being pulled on so sharply that there is not much chance of catching anything.

With love to all

From yr affect son

Julius, Dyson, Laurie
