My dear Mother

At last I have collected a few things to send you as specimens of the country. Let me commence by assuring you the contents of the Box are not intrinsically worth sending. The fact is I could not get any thing in or about this out of the way part of the world that is worthy of being sent a couple of miles as a Gift, but having said I would send something I have scraped together a few Native things & with two or three pictures I hope they may prove acceptable.

The Shawl (unworthy of that name) came from Lucknow as ‘Loot’ & I think may make a tablecloth. Look into the little boxes. In some there are little specimens of Delhi Jewellery. Mind, you must divide the spoils. Dr Pennington of Ours I expect will be the bearer of this, so please, if you can be of any use to him, do. He goes home sick. I fear the figures will all smash on the road, but have put lots of wool about them.

Let me finish by assuring you what is wanting in presents is made up in love to you all,

& Believe me to be

Yr affect Son
