Camp before Sebastopol

Sept. 7th 1855

Dear Father

I received two letters from you this evening. For the first I must thank you for saying that you will not let me run short with Powell. The only way to keep alive out here is to live well which I really could not do on what you allowed me.

Do not send me out anything to make a Spec of, in the shape of horses or anything else as I should make a smell of it & it would not do for the 34th.

I have just written to my Mother. I told her all the news.

We opened fire two days ago & tomorrow at 12 we go at the Redan. We lost a number of Ofrs. last time but I hope we shall be more fortunate now.

I wish you would send me out some things – that is to say a thick Pea jacket, Waterproof Sheet, air pillow & a couple of sheep skins & anything else you may think of.

I have to thank you for sending out Hogarth in conjunction with John.

The mare has not arrived yet, or rather I have not heard of it. I was here long before she could have arrived at Malta & as there are 3 or 4 Generals there, your note has probably gone to one of them as there is no Offr. commanding the Depôt of our Regt. there, now they have drafted them all on here.

Peter is now at Kamiesch on board the Alipore; he has had a great deal of trouble changing ships.

from yr affect son

Julius, Dyson, Laurie

Lt. 34th Regt.
