My dear Father

Most welcome was the news, brought by the last mail, regarding the state of your health. Sincerely do I congratulate you on the improvement there announced & trust by this time, if not quite yourself again, you may have nearly recovered. I fear you must have suffered very much, but now I hope the time has come when you can look back at all your pains & consider them as things of the past.

I was much afraid when, by one Mail, the news of the beginning of your illness & the rumour of the U. Bank loss arrived. For I thought you would experience a great shock if any thing was to happen & you were to be unable to attend to business. Now I thank God for carrying you safely through such great dangers & from day to day look forward to the next Mail which will I hope confirm the good news brought by the last.

On the other hand, what a most unpleasant event the death of Uncle Lloyd was. I am sorry, indeed, very sorry to hear of it. From the short account I received of it, it appeared that it must have been very sudden. He was truly a good man I imagine & I know he was a most kind one. How much my poor Aunt will feel his loss.

I was very glad the other day to hear from John that he thought he could arrange about getting home. I hope he will soon settle it & get on his way. He will be a great source of comfort to both you & my mother. I hope she, notwithstanding all her troubles & anxieties, is none the worse. You should install John in London to look after all your concerns & go right away into the Country & take a good rest.

John talked about selling out. I hope he will not do that. I expect he would regret it.

Now I did not mean to write a long letter but simply to congratulate you.

So with best love to my Mother, Helen & all

Believe me,

Yr affect Son
