My dear Father

I am not yet floored, you will see by this letter. Like poor Col., hurt, but the doctors say I am getting on flourishingly.

Tell my Mother she need not alarm herself and also that I hope to be with her, if my wound continues as favourable as it is now, before long.

John was over here today and wanted to know if he could do anything for me. I am going to ask him tomorrow to get me a goat so that I shall have a good supply of milk, which will be worth a great deal to me.

We have had a great deal of rain here lately but it makes very slight difference to me as I am confined to my bed. I have just changed my servant for a better – he is an old soldier and understands wounds as he has been wounded four times in the head by the bayonet. He sleeps in my tent at night.

I am sorry I am not able to write myself, as I am not allowed to sit up for that purpose.

With love to all

from your affectionate son
