Week #2: Tools of Astronomy and Our Moon

This week's Tasks : September 15th - 21st, 2014

Welcome to Week #2! Now that you have a basic understanding of the discipline of Earth Science, we are now going to move on to study Astronomy and Planetary Science. Over the next five weeks, you will be asked to perform many tasks. Please pay attention to the instructions that I will provide to you. Remember, that not submitting assignments on time will be assessed a 10% penalty.

Tasks will include demonstrating, interacting, communicating, describing, analyzing, recognizing and organizing your understanding of concepts within this unit of study. It is really important that you use your time management skills to complete all tasks in a timely manner. Good luck and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Tasks to Complete this week (students may complete in any order they please)

1. Complete Quiz #1 (DEADLINE to complete is 11:59 pm on September 21st) using the LMS (Based on Chapter 1 Study Guide & Chapter 2 Study Guide). Remember that you will only have one attempt to complete all quizzes. You also only have 20 minutes to complete, so make sure that you have completed the reading and study guide(s) before you attempt any quiz in this course. GO TO Assessment and then QUIZZES AND SELECT Quiz #1 when you are ready to complete it in full.

3. Online Demonstrations and Simulations

* Each week I will be asking you to complete a series of online demonstrations and / or simulations that will help supplement your understanding of the key concepts in that section of the course. Please be sure to visit and complete these demos and / or simulations as most of them are quite useful and relevant.

a. Telescope Simulator

b. Lunar Phase Simulator

c. Lunar Phase Simulator #2

d. Tides Demonstration

4. Complete the Chapter 28 Study Guide - you will need to print this directly or you can complete it using google docs. Although I will not be collecting or evaluating the Study Guides, I highly recommend completing them as I often use questions directly from these guides. These guides are useful for keeping up with all content.
