Module #24 - Climate Change Debate Preparation

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TODAY

1. Today you will be placed in groups to prepare arguments for our Global Climate Change Summit in class tomorrow.

2. In your small groups - see lists below (each group will represent a country), you must complete the following in class today:

a. Identify the major sources of pollution and greenhouse gases that your country contributes annually that enhance the Global greenhouse effect. Is your country currently addressing the issue of climate change, and if not, why are they not addressing it?

b. Identify where your country stands on the topic of "Global Climate Change". Does your country support the Kyoto Protocol? (you will have to find out what this "protocol" is first)

c. Your country will have to come up with a prepared proposal at the Global Environmental Summit (tomorrow - Module #25) to significantly reduce global greenhouse gases in your country by the year 2025 (or maybe your country thinks that they don't need to reduce emmissions?). Each country will have 5 - 10 minutes to present their ENGAGING proposal and hopefully persuade the participants at the Summit to do their part to combat Global Climate Change. Be prepared to go and be prepared to share the individual concerns and strategies that your country is willing to commit to achieve this goal. There will also be a time for discussion and debate at the end of the period tomorrow.

d. Tomorrow, there will be a list of questions that your country will have to address. Be sure to do your "homework" today and prepare for arguments and proposals from other countries / participants. BONUS MARKS TO THOSE GROUPS THAT MAKE THE EFFORT TO "DRESS UP" AND POSSIBLY BRING PROPS THAT REPRESENT THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRY (i.e. flag, banner, clothing, etc)

THE OVERALL GOAL OF THE CONFERENCE IS TO COME UP WITH A BINDING AGREEMENT THAT ALL COUNTRIES WILL AGREE TO SIGN AND RATIFY.

GOOD LUCK!
