No-Sew Shawl

Join the motifs as you go, then add the edging. No sewing needed!

Skill level-Easy

Materials: 5 skeins Red Heart Soft Yarn in Wheat or desired color, size I Crochet hook (5.5 mm) or size to give gauge, scissors, smaller hook or yarn needle to weave in ends.

Gauge: 3 dc= 1”, 5 rounds= 3”. Motif is approximately 9” in diameter. Finished shawl is about 30” long by 82” wide including edging.

Special stitch

Popcorn stitch (PC)-Work 4 dc in stitch, remove hook, insert hook in 1st of 4 dc and draw lp through, ch 1 to close the popcorn. This counts as 1 stitch. When working into a popcorn stitch in the following round, dc into the ch-1.

Motif 1-

Ch 6, sl st into first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1-Ch 2 as first dc, 17 dc into ring, join with sl st to top of ch-2. 18 dc (hint-crochet over starting tail to avoid weaving in that end)

Rnd 2-Ch 4 as first dc and ch 2, (dc in next 3 sts, ch 2)5x, dc in next 2 sts, sl st into 2nd ch of ch-4, sl st into ch-2 sp just created. (18 dc, 3 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 3-Ch 4 as first dc and ch 2, (dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, pc in next dc, dc in next dc, dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2)5x, dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, pc in next dc, dc in join, sl st into 2nd ch of ch-4, sl st into ch-2 sp just created. (24 dc, 6 pc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 4-Ch 4 as first dc and ch 2, (dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, pc in next dc, dc in top of pc, pc in next dc, dc in next dc, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2)5x, dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, pc in next dc, dc in top of pc, pc in next dc, dc in join, sl st into 2nd ch of ch-4, sl st into ch-2 sp just created. (30 dc, 12 pc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 5-Ch 4 as first dc and ch-2, (dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next 2 dc, dc in pc, pc in dc, dc in pc, dc in next 2 dc, dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2)5x, dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next 2 dc, dc in pc, pc in dc, dc in pc, dc in dc, dc in join, sl st into 2nd ch of ch-4, sl st into ch-2 sp just created. (48 dc, 6 pc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 6-Ch 4 as first dc and ch-2, (dc in ch-2 sp and in next 9 sts, dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2)5x. dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next 8 sts, dc in join, sl st into 2nd ch of ch-4, sl st into ch-2 sp just created. (66 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 7-Ch 4 as first dc and ch-2, (dc in ch-2 sp and in next 11 sts, dc in ch-2 sp)5x, dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next 10 sts, dc in join, sl st into 2nd ch of ch-4, end off. (78 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Second motif-Work rounds 1-6 as in first motif, for 2nd motif, join one side per diagram. Note that each side has 15 sts: ch, 13 dc, and ch. Work round 7 up to the point you are joining the motifs. Position completed motif behind 2nd motif with WS’s facing. The loop on the crochet hook forms the next ch st or the top of the next st. For each st, remove the loop from the hook, insert the hook from front to back into the corresponding ch or st on the completed motif, draw the loop through, pull up any slack, and complete the ch or dc on the second motif. When the 15 sts are complete, complete round 7 as for the first motif and end off.

Complete motifs 3-5 in the same fashion, following the diagram in sequence. Motif 6 is joined on 2 sides. Motifs 7 is joined on 3 sides, motif 8 is joined on 2 sides, motifs 9-10 are joined on 3 sides. Motif 11 is joined on 2 sides, motif 12 on 3 sides, motif 13 on 2 sides, motifs 14-15 on 2 sides.

Edging-With RS facing, join yarn with ch3 as first dc in bl of indicated side of motif 1 or 5.

Row 1 (work in bl only)-dc in same st as join, 2 dc in each st around to side of corresponding motif., turn. 630 dc

Rows 2-3 (work in both lps of st), ch 3 as first dc, dc in each st around. End off at the end of row 3.

Finishing- Weave in all ends.
