Abstract: A consistent relationship exists between socioeconomic status (SES) and academic achievement outcomes for students at various age levels. A series of lab and field studies illuminate specific identity-based pathways that drive the association between status and outcomes for youth. First, field experiments show that perceiving an “open path” to college and connecting college to future goals increases school motivation for low-SES middle school students. Second, in a high school setting, increased subjective social status predicts better grades, through higher emotional well-being and more productive study strategies. Lastly, in the college context, an experimental manipulation and a larger scale intervention enhance achievement-based identities, motivation, and GPA for students from low-SES backgrounds and first-generation college students.
