The Use of Video to Support Teacher Learning

Instructor: Cheryl Rosaen (crosaen@msu.edu)

Thursday, 12:40 - 3:30

Room 128 Erickson

While the use of video in teacher education and teacher professional development is becoming increasingly common, it is important to understand which types of experiences serve particular learning goals. This course focuses on theory and research on the use of video technology to support teacher learning across the preservice and inservice levels. We will examine how teacher learning is conceptualized and the ways in which various conceptualizations influence the design and implementation of approaches to supporting teachers' work with video technology. We will also engage in critical analysis of how various approaches are studied.

Examples of research on the use of video technology will include consideration of:

o a range of international and U.S. contexts for supporting teacher learning (e.g., professional development programs, course work, independent use)

o the content and focus of video records (e.g., subject matter, grade level, instructional practices, students, teacher, video of self or others)

o goals for working with video (e.g., knowledge, beliefs, reflection, analysis, expertise)

o approaches to scaffolding teachers' work with video (e.g., frameworks for analysis, program features and affordances)

o outcomes of teachers' work with video (e.g., teachers' perceptions, analytic skills to study teaching, reflection on and analysis of one's own practices)

We will explore a range of video-based programs and engage in discussions with researchers who conduct research on the use of video to support teacher learning.
