Residential College in the Arts and Humanities

Language Mentor Fellowship Program 2014-2015

Call for Applications

The Residential College in the Arts and Humanities (RCAH) at Michigan State University, in collaboration with the Graduate School and the Office of Undergraduate Education at Michigan State University, is sponsoring a fellowship program for graduate and undergraduate students with (near) native fluency in a language other than English and interests in undergraduate teaching, learning, and/or program development in world language proficiency.

The RCAH’s Language Proficiency Program provides its students additional opportunities to apply and strengthen their knowledge of world languages and cultures in a variety of contexts within the RCAH and the wider community. Language Mentors selected for this program collaborate with faculty, staff, and other mentors in this initiative, creating, delivering, and/or evaluating integrated language options that are woven into the RCAH curriculum and co-curricular programs.

Directly engaged with RCAH students, language mentors are introduced to and gain experience in needs assessment, materials development, instructional delivery, student assessment, and/or program evaluation. Mentors are encouraged to collaborate on the design and implementation of research projects in the aforementioned areas and to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences. Mentors also participate in regular meetings with other RCAH fellowship recipients, faculty and staff. Discussions focus on pedagogical practices to promote student learning and processes and procedures to advance program development. Each mentor receives $8,000 to support project expenses and/or travel to a professional conference. Eligible students are traditional, non-traditional, or international students enrolled in any MSU college. Applicants should be enrolled full-time in a program in their field, be in good academic standing and making progress toward their degrees. Applicants must be native or near-native speakers of a language other than English.

Applications should include a single PDF file of

1) Applicant Information Form (see below);

2) CV (briefly describe your level of proficiency in a world language other than English); and

3) An essay (maximum 800 words) that addresses reasons for applying; your professional goals and how participation will help you achieve those goals.

Awards are made to individuals who have demonstrated academic achievement, are committed to a career related to undergraduate teaching and learning, and show potential to contribute to the RCAH Language Proficiency Program in a meaningful way. No prior experience is necessary. Mentors selected for 2014-15 will be eligible to re-apply for a second year.

Mentors for French, Spanish, German, Italian, as well as other Less Commonly Taught Languages will likely be chosen for 2014-2015. The final deadline for applications is April 21, 2014.

For further information or questions regarding the program, please see the RCAH website
