Earlier during the week, while having sundowners at Tiger Reef beach bar, we spoke to Henry, a local man, who recommended that we do a self-drive through the Namib-Naukluft park. We obtained a permit from NWR in Swakopmund to do the self-drive on Friday 14th as the weather forecast cold coastal weather on this day. As the round trip is 400km, we set-off at 08h00 and returned home at 16h30.
The drive through the park was terrific with a number of camping sites throughout the park where we stopped for tea-breaks. Considering the sparseness of the landscape, we saw hundreds of Zebra, Oryx and Springbok and a Jackal.
We drove to view a Welwitschia Mirabilis plant that is over 1500 years old which only grows in the Namib Desert and is considered a very rare plant.
I would recommend camping at Blutkopje Campsite 01 where we stopped for lunch. A great setting from which you can hike and explore the park further.
Route driven in Land Rover of 400km.
