We got up early to leave camp by 06h20 when the gates open to enjoy the early morning coolness and animals. We decided to have breakfast at the main camp called Okaukuejo and refuel the Defender. Approximately 7 km from Halali camp we were fortunate to see the 8 lionesses we had seen the previous day had killed a Zebra and were enjoying there breakfast. There were a number of Hyena and Jackal hanging around hoping to get some left-overs. The kill had occurred next to the main road and we were the only vehicle – The advantage of getting going early. It did not take long before other vehicles arrived.
After refuelling, we headed west to Olifantsrus Camp which had only been opened to the public a month ago. We drove to view the Sprokieswoud/Gruenewald (Green Forest) that consists of a large tree with green leaves that contrast against the dry surroundings. We followed the spoor of a large lion for about 1km along the road before the spoor disappeared into the veld.
There is an interesting museum at the camp site where 550 elephant were culled in the 1980’s to help preserve the park during the “big drought”. As a result of the culling over 30 years ago, the elephants do not visit the waterhole – Elephants have good memories.
