As we got closer to the coast, the temperature dropped. This is due to the cold Atlantic Sea. It was a nice break from the searing heat we experienced inland.
Our destination for the night was Swakopmund. 126km from Swakopmund we saw a sign to “Cape Cross Lodge” and decided to see what it was like. I suggested we camp at the Lodge and Lynne’s response was “as long as they have fish & chips at the restaurant” After enquiring, we setup camp. This Lodge is an oasis in the desolate landscape of “nothing” – No trees, plant life or animal life. Occasionally we would see the odd desert plant, but no trees. The camp sites at the lodge are located behind the Lodge thereby protecting campers from the Atlantic wind.
The next morning we visited the Seal Colony. It is amazing to see such a large number of seals. We also came across a very poisonous scorpion.
There is a small salt mine at Cape Cross where we bought some salt crystals for home consumption.
The camp sites at the Seal Colony are on right on the beach but with no facilities. The camps were closed as it was Seal culling season.
