Seachrán Sidhe

Seachrán Sidhe

The beginning of a lay from the Waterford Gaeltacht.

The melody is played on the uilleann pipes by Séamus Ennis.

Seachrán Sidhe a bhain liom san oíche

A Faerie Straying happened to me in the night

's é adéarfadh mo mhuintir nach ea;

And my people would tell you it is not so;

Ach dar gach Bíobla do scríobhadh aríamh

But by all the Bibles that were ever written

Do chaitheas an oíche úd ag Fleá.

I spent that night at a Feast.

Do thógadar síos go Halla na Síóg mé

They took me down to the Faerie Hall

'S ag sin Banflaith shéimh chneasta dhubh na Fleá;

And there was the gentle decent dark-haired Princess of the Feast;

Maedhbh, mo shearc féin, dob ea í sin:

Maeve, my own true love, is who it was:

'S cuma gáire nach raibh ar a haghaidh...

And the appearance of a smile was not on her face...
