Heresy, Schism, Disobedience

Heresy is the choosing of a belief that has already been rejected by the Church as contrary to the Faith.

Obedience is the complying with a legitimate direction from a lawful superior.

Disobedience is the refusal of compliance with a legitimate direction from a lawful superior without, however, rejecting the authority of that superior outright.

Schism is the denial of the existence of the legitimate authority of the Catholic Church. This generally entails a rejection of a definitive ruling of the Pope or of an ecumenical Council in communion with him.
