HOMELESSNESS and the Simon Community

In the Middle Ages (the Ages of Faith) it was ILLEGAL to deprive a man of the tools of his trade, or of his house, no matter what debt he had incurred.  And every town had an Almoner, paid for out of town revenue, whose job it was to ensure that nobody in the community was destitute.

There was at least one 'Holiday of Obligation' per week, on which it was illegal to work.  Thus all tradesmen were protected from unfair competition, and the workers from slavery.

With the destruction of the Catholic Social Order in what all the books call the Reformation, the convents and monasteries were closed, the free schools run by Teaching Religious were abolished, the Almoner was abolished, The Almshouses were closed, and instead they built the Workhouses.  Meanwhile 'Relief' was doled out to 'The Deserving Poor'...

Simon Community are a shining light in our vandalised society.
