Pope Benedict calls for Assisi III in 2011

(NFTU) Pope Benedict of Rome called today for the sequel to the biggest ecumenical event of the 20th century-- the 1986 Prayer for Peace in Assisi with representatives of every religion jumping about and praying to their "gods" in one huge syncretistic prayer service that spanned a number of churches and locales throughout the city.

In his 2011 World Peace Day speech for today, the Pope gave a typical contradictory statement: "The path to take is not the way of relativism or religious syncretism. The Church, in fact, “proclaims, and is in duty bound to proclaim without fail, Christ who is the way, the truth and the life (Jn 14:6); in Christ, in whom God reconciled all things to himself, people find the fullness of the religious life”. Yet this in no way excludes dialogue and the common pursuit of truth in different areas of life, since, as Saint Thomas Aquinas would say, “every truth, whoever utters it, comes from the Holy Spirit”....The year 2011 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace convened in Assisi in 1986 by Pope John Paul II. On that occasion the leaders of the great world religions testified to the fact that religion is a factor of union and peace, and not of division and conflict. The memory of that experience gives reason to hope for a future in which all believers will see themselves, and will actually be, agents of justice and peace."

According to the New York Times, the Pope then said that he would "travel as a pilgrim to Assisi in October, inviting Christians of other confessions, leaders of other world faiths 'and, ideally, all men of good will, to recall the historic gesture sought by my predecessor and to solemnly renew the commitment of the faithful of all religious to live their own religious faith as a service for the cause of peace.' "

So in the name of not taking the way of relativism or religious syncretism, Pope Benedict plans to follow in John Paul II's footsteps in orchestrating a sequel to the biggest syncretistic event in history.

What a way to start 2011.

[MOF: At the other two "Interfaith events", the Blessed Sacrament was removed from one altar so that an idol of Buddha could be placed there instead; the Jews demanded a room that had not been blessed. After the 'Interfaith Event' there was an earthquake in the Basilica of Assisi that brought in part of the roof. It did not touch the High altar, but pulverised the place where these representatives had been standing. Cdl Ratzinger had declined to attend the Second of these outrages, but now seems to have changed his stance.]
