Doctopus, Goobric, and More Scripts
Collecting, monitoring, and grading Google Docs is one of those logistical issues that teachers must face when utilizing Google Docs with students.
Lucky for us, a resourceful script programmer wrote a Google Spreadsheet script just for us called Doctopus and a Chrome extension called Goobric. Together these tools allow easy use with students.
How Doctopus Works
- Start with a Google Doc template (note sheet, pre-writing guide, blank document with a rubric, etc.).
- Put all your students Google account addresses into a Google Spreadsheet.
- Install the Doctopus script from the Script Gallery.
- Run the script.
- Each student gets a copy of the template - you named it AND you own it.
- Monitor progress through the Last Edited column in the Spreadsheet.
- Grade using Goobric (see below).
- When finished, give students ownership of the documents.
How Goobric Works
- Create a rubric in Google Spreadsheets.
- Install the Goobric Chrome Extension.
- In the Doctopus options in the Doctopus spreadsheet, Attach a Rubric.
- Go to each document and click on te Goobric "eye" in the Address Bar.
- Complete the rubric.
- The rubric and your comments are added to the document AND the Doctopus spreadsheet.
A full description and a video tutorial is available at the Doctopus script site.
