Doctopus, Goobric, and More Scripts

Overview

Collecting, monitoring, and grading Google Docs is one of those logistical issues that teachers must face when utilizing Google Docs with students.

Lucky for us, a resourceful script programmer wrote a Google Spreadsheet script just for us called Doctopus and a Chrome extension called Goobric. Together these tools allow easy use with students.

How Doctopus Works

  1. Start with a Google Doc template (note sheet, pre-writing guide, blank document with a rubric, etc.).
  2. Put all your students Google account addresses into a Google Spreadsheet.
  3. Install the Doctopus script from the Script Gallery.
  4. Run the script.
  5. Each student gets a copy of the template - you named it AND you own it.
  6. Monitor progress through the Last Edited column in the Spreadsheet.
  7. Grade using Goobric (see below).
  8. When finished, give students ownership of the documents.

How Goobric Works

  1. Create a rubric in Google Spreadsheets.
  2. Install the Goobric Chrome Extension.
  3. In the Doctopus options in the Doctopus spreadsheet, Attach a Rubric.
  4. Go to each document and click on te Goobric "eye" in the Address Bar.
  5. Complete the rubric.
  6. The rubric and your comments are added to the document AND the Doctopus spreadsheet.

A full description and a video tutorial is available at the Doctopus script site.
