With the web now an integral part of everyone's lives, having a web-homebase is key way to keep organized, easily connect with the school community, and provide a jumping off point to the rest of the Internet.

Part 1 - Google Sites

  1. What is a Google Site and why should I care?
      • A website creator / wiki that allows you to easily create an individual or collaborative website.
      • It is free and easy and everyone goes online first these days.
      • It also allows to embed Google Docs, Calendars, Picasa, YouTube, and much more!
  2. Can you show me some examples?
  3. What is the value of creating and maintaining a web presence in a traditional class? In a student government class?
    1. What items do you think might be include on an ASB website? Let's brainstorm some ideas together here.
      • Calendar
      • Forms - permission slips, facilities requests,
      • Form for student recognition, award ceremonies
      • Photographs!!!
      • Video of events - preparation, advertisements, etc.
      • Mini-lessons on how to do something specific
      • Event page - do, doing, done chart - progress, planning for events

      • Questions and Answer (FAQs)
      • Discussion Forum (Kids participating in discussions)
      • Allow students to upload their photos of an event
      • Ticker - fund raising goal
      • Virtual idea box - submit ideas
      • Place to put documents so students can download their own copies.

      • Reminders - submit e-mail for notification

  4. How do I get started?
      1. Set up a Gmail Account if you don't have one (separate from your personal account and you should avoid setting up a Google Account associated with your school e-mail unless you are already using Google Apps).
      2. Create a site.
      3. Start adding content.
      4. Demo of the basics: Set up, design, page creation, sharing.

Part 2 - Google Calendar

  1. What is Google Calendar?
      • An online calendar system that allows you to:
        • Make multiple calendars in a single Google Account - How could this be used in ASB?
        • Embed a calendar in Google Sites or other web site.
        • Share calendars with others.
        • Collectively maintain a calendar with others.
        • Keep the calendar public or private
        • Subscribe to other people's events and/or calendars as a whole

      • Think of the Potential...If every teacher at your school did their schedule on Google Calendar, parents and students could subscribe to each class calendar. Wouldn't that be a great service for your students?
