Spanish Class Penny War

Spanish Class Penny War

By Jessica Gouldby

Pennies fly like bullets, dollars giving out paper cuts, gashes staining faces and limbs with green discoloration as Fremont Middle/High School students war. I haven't seen a friendly face in many days. The reward hangs in our minds every minute, while high school students take their lunch time to run to the bank and withdraw rolls of change. Change (in both meanings of the word) flood our hallways. Vending machines have been scavenged for the currency held inside. We all fight for one thing, one reason, one goal: a pizza party.

Well, maybe it hasn't been that intense, but that doesn't change how competitive we all have gotten over the last month. Despite sophomores making a heading, in the beginning, they were quickly hindered, as seniors pushed forward with rolls and rolls of pennies, before being pushed back again by dollar bills that cut egos as sharply as knives. Dollars ended up being treated as weapons, and by the third day, seniors were in the negative as others stuffed 20$ bills into their jar before the day was done. The junior high schoolers were doing great as well, pushing forward and bringing their best, taking up the top three placings often, pressuring the juniors and sophomores with their effort. By the third day, only the freshmen avoided getting cash in their jar, but that didn't last very long. Still, despite our fiery entrance, shooting forward from the starting line with all we've got, we have still slowed down as the end line draws nearer. November 12th, that's the last day, the day points are tallied, the day we find our winner. My friends, my comrades, don´t stop now. Push harder; bring all we have got to the table; we cannot let the other classes win; we can´t wave the white flag now. Even if you can't bring pennies any other day, bring them on November 11th. Even if you can't bring cash any other day, bring cash on November 11th. Make your last stand, push forward, shoot the others down. May the dawn of November 12 bring victory, bring the pizza party unto your grasps. Fight.
