What is Integrity?
By Addison Mecham
Have you ever worked in a place where you had a coworker that was dishonest about tips? Well you may be surprised that this happens more than it should. Many people tend to purposefully not split tips evenly and then pretend like nothing ever happened. I started out by learning what integrity is myself and what I think it means in my personal opinion: integrity is being honest no matter what the punishment is that follows.
After I learned what integrity was, I asked a couple of people for some experiences that they may have had in their daily lives at work, so here are some of the answers I received. The first person I asked works at a hotel, and they have tip envelopes in the certain rooms they are assigned to clean and her coworker would occasionally go into other people's assigned rooms and take their tips. Stealing tips is wrong in so many ways and does not show integrity at all.
Here is another example that does not show integrity. The next person I talked to works in customer service and as a waitress of sorts. She was working with a coworker that had messed up an order and instead of telling anyone she chose to withhold the truth and not worry about it. However later on her boss found out what had happened and she no longer has that job. This example shows how in the long run the truth always comes out.
Being honest is often something that matters most to people whether it may hurt them at first or not. In the long run they will appreciate that you told them the truth instead of them hearing it from someone else. So I challenge anyone who reads this article to always be honest no matter what other people think, because the truth always comes out eventually.
