New Years is the time when a new calendar year begins. People celebrate New Years in many different ways. On New Years many businesses are closed and students are out of school. Every culture has their own way of celebrating New years.
Many cities in the UK celebrate new years by putting on public firework displays. The London new years parade is considered to be the largest new year parade in the world.
In China the elders give young members of their family money in red envelopes. There is also a fairly large amount of drinking, especially traditional wines or liquor.
New years in Spain is known as the “Nochevieja” (old night). It is a custom to stay home til midnight and at midnight people eat twelve grapes, one at each stroke of the clock. This is supposed to bring good luck, prosperity and happiness in the new year.
