My name is Kathy Voros and I am a teacher for Study Skills, and co-teacher for English classes with Mrs. Klein. Welcome to the 2021-22 school year! I’m very excited to get back to the classroom and meet my students in person.
A bit about myself. I was born in Hungary, was a child in Ohio, and came to California in time to go to Marston and Clairemont. I went to almost every higher learning institution in San Diego, but graduated (finally!) from UCSD with a degree in History. In a gap year after college, I decided to experiment with a teaching credential and fell in love with teaching. (Since I was trying for a Technical Writing career I have never regretted the decision to teach). It was just luck that I was hired at Clairemont after specializing in Education. I didn’t get far away in miles, but I got light years away in motivation and love for teaching; and since I’ve always thought Clairemont was the best school in the universe, it has been a privilege to work here.
Similar to how I lucked into teaching, I was drafted to sponsor a club almost 10 years ago. Since then, the Anime Club has been a bright spark in my week. The students that I’ve been privileged to host in coming together regardless of their grade or their position in the inevitable hierarchy of teenagers to watch their favorite Animes, (Wednesdays at lunch) have been some of the most well-rounded, welcoming and delightful people I have ever met.
As I’ve touched on in my video, one of the things that currently resonates with me is the time and the quality of understanding that young people are exposed to on social media sites. In my Study Skills class, (and whenever else I am given the opportunity to pontificate),I touch on goal making, ethics, and also I want students to reflect on their interaction with the internet. I encourage them to question the content of their exposure to the ever changing priorities of the people they see online. What is the latest style, and why is that important? Who are they encouraged to judge? How is it impacting their opinions? How can they tell what is true? I want them to know that the information they see is often skewed to the advantage of others. Also, to know how they can use the tool of the internet to build community, and make valuable connections. As you can see, this is something I am passionate about.
I am so happy to be back in person teaching here at Clairemont. My contact information is: kvoros@sandi.net, and I am in room 107. My extension is 3108.
