This project was composed to a brief I received from a fellow student in my Major project development class. The brief was to score a piece of music to be used in a trailer for a remake of the film Highlander. As part of the brief I was given some examples of music and a description of the vibe the producers of the trailer are aiming for.

I used classic war drums, drones and vocals to achieve a viking war style tune. In this composition was able to record vocals from some of my peers this trimester Hannah Buck, Luke Bonner and Ed Bambach.

The aspect of this composition I found most challenging was the instrumentation. It was hard to write a Nordic style war tune from sunny beachy bryon bay. I used the drone footage that you see in this clip to help me feel the vibe.

I love Sci-fi, In particular I love sci-fi with a real steampunk aesthetic to it. I chose to compose a new theme song to the series altered carbon. Personally I feel like the current theme doesn't fit the aesthetic of the series well, it feels outdated and miss matched. I love writing electronic music which comes more naturally to me so being able to play with synths was more within my comfort zone however when working on this composition I wanted to be sure that I captured the suspense and emotiveness of the series. I used lots of pads and the melodies I chose I feel really help capture the emotion and set you up for the series to follow.

I recommend having a listen to the original theme song for altered carbon and compare the two. Let me know what you think?

Reflection

Over this trimester we focused on linear and non linear composition. Until this trimester I really didn't have much of an idea of both of these styles of composing and hadn't really had much experience with composing in these styles. With my music I am mostly focused on live performance and writing mad dub beats however writing in this style has been something I have enjoyed a lot!. Writing for linear narrative such as theme songs for film and tv or scoring feature film compositions to help tell a specific narrative is something I see can see myself really getting involved with in the future, it's fun. To begin this trimester I felt like I really stepped a lot more out of my comfort zone than normal. Take the viking composition for example, that whole style of composing was new to me such as the vocal recording and trying to get away from synthesis to be more authentic to the nordic viking style theme. Non-linear composing was really new to me this trimester. Before this tri I had never really composed anything to be specifically non linear and learning how to create generative patches that can be manipulated live was really exciting. I love dance music and dance beats but this trimester has highlighted to me that music isn't just that, in fact there are many different avenues for a music producer. I would love to one day work on musical installations, music art. It's great to have gone through this trimester and learn more about what we can create and how else we can use the tools we have at hand. Overall this trimester gets and HD (High Distinction) from me.
