Lino Cut - Pattern & Colour

Through this project, I discovered the LinoCut technique. The aim was to choose a letter and find a creative way of position and composition to create a step-and-repeat pattern that can be applied to fabric or wallpaper. I decided to go with the letter A using the font "Allumi Std Extended Inline - Black 24" to have a result of a gothic style pattern. I chose dark red and yellow to give a feeling of energy, joy, courage and power.

Packaging Redesign - San Remo Spaghetti

San Remo has been on the top list for Italian pasta products 100% Australian-made. They have clear, outstanding branding, showing the story and its values. I chose to go with a Serif font that resembles an 18-century typeface to reflect Italy and the beauty of its history and loving food reputation. San Remo likes to keep its origin to the homeland, so instead of illustrating the two brothers, I decided to design the contour of Italy filled with aboriginal patterns and colours. The filling should show the 100% Australian-made product. The whole packaging would be printed on cardboard to suit the eco-friendly cover and give an organic feel to it.

Work-placement - Flotsam Surf Film & Photography Festival 2022

During last trimester, I was able to do my 80hours work placement with Flotsam Festival at the Gold Coast. It was an amazing opportunity that opened new doors for me. The festival had its premiere this year; therefore, I had the chance to see every side of the organisation and design various projects. I got to create posters, flyers and social media tiles. Fill out the Flotsam website on WordPress, research artists for bios, upload social media content, create media kits, and set/convert photographs for different types of prints (posters, panels) and screens.

The fantastic part is that they let me be part of the festival, not just as a designer but also as an artist. I was allowed to showcase my photography through prints, big screen, Instagram tiles, and slideshows and be part of the Mentor short documentary film Project.

Reflection

I started my Major Project this trimester. My idea is to design a photography coffee table book in a magazine format—the same style as my inspiration, "Humans of New York" by Brandon Stanton, but my version will be about the stories behind the lens. Each edition would have a different theme, and I would start Surf Photography. I will interview photographers and ask them to tell me the story behind a shot they feel strongly about. The brainstorming and the prospectus for the project were quite time-consuming, but I stayed organised with my time management. The writing document let me apply the new skills and learning outcomes I gained from the studio class. Also, having the chance to create a project that could potentially be a quick start for my future carrier motivates me and gets me excited for what will come after SAE.
