ORCHESTRAL RECORDING

VAISHNAV SATHEESH & JARMILA SUSTROVA

This piece is a musical integration of various moods in terms of themes with a variety of different time and key signatures melted down into a single 2-minute track which would be mixed in 5.1 to receive the immersiveness.

The media asset is an orchestral piece which is entirely composed by me and my duo partner. The orchestral piece mostly has a mixed scale approach which triggers different kinds of emotions when played.

Jarmila was my co-partner for this project and she helped me to get through the arrangements and organisation of the recording. The recording dates, artist availability, artist communication, studio bookings and project management were handled by her.

This work was entitled as a portfolio piece for the 'Vaishnav-Karthik' youtube handle making it a demo piece to be shown to the film directors and producers. The final aim of the recording was to layer it with the midi strings in order to get the huge grand orchestral sound. The final product of the recording was stereo tracks, comped and time fixed with respect to the mic and played sections.

Process

The score is all about various emotions coming together weaving a complex Mixolydian feel. The inspiration for this score is derived from various Hollywood scores such as dark knight, Jurassic park and Star Wars. We followed and interpreted the works of composers ranging from Mozart to Hans Zimmer and created a variety of key signature-changing elements with signature differences making it a different new concept in terms of score.

Even before the composition took place, I and my duo composer had strict ideas and plans of having multiple time and key signature changes which is not normally found in thematic score pieces of two minutes in duration.

This being considered as a portfolio project, we did want some some heavy jazz chord change happening in the legato lines which is not used in the conventional orchestral scores. This was purposely thought in order to impress the fellow directors, composers and producers whom we would pitch for projects.

We aimed for making the score in Logic pro with the exact sounding and articulation and planned to get it layered by musicians. In the ideal scenario, the score has to be played by a large orchestral sections which was not possible by us due to financial constraints. So, in order to get the naturality and feel, layering the top lines with a quartet section and midi production with usage of high quality sample libraries was our idea in order to pull this off.

Some examples of the score which I was inspired include:

(xman77c, 2012)

(Deutsche Grammophon - DG, 2020)

As we had no prior experience in writing a score with sheet music, we had to be good with the instrument voice ranging. During the initial sketch in LPX, we did write some pieces, not in the instruments' voice range which we identified later that it would be hard for the musicians to re-create. Due to this, we had to research the instrument and its voice range and its history. We even had to research more intensely in order to learn about the articulations made by the instruments.

As all the musicians had the request of score sheets, I had to prepare midi writing into sheet music and it was really a new kind of learning to me.

This was also PROJECT 3 and it was the portfolio website which I had created during the last trimester.

REFLECTION

The importance of projects during this trimester has to be mentioned as it did make me go through all the unconventional and untraveled ways. This subject was interesting as it had many hurdles during the projects, yet I overcame them all. My audio and technical skills and communicative skills were the main developments during this subject as I was forced to do all three during the projects. After finishing AUD212, I didn't realise that this subject would be so crucial in terms of the development of my audio skills in the core. The lectures with Kev and his explanation in the utmost simple and understandable form started opening up a new world to me.

The lectures for project 1 took me through the deep world of synthesis. Kev himself, being a sound designer, put light on me on how synthesis and sampling can bring a significant impact in the sound design arena. I was amused by the way he explained every concept. My interest in sound design became more due to Kev's lectures and philosophies.

Introduction to Bitwig was a key factor for my knowledge in synthesis growth. I started seeing synthesis than hearing which is ironic but seeing makes a clear image and memory of the working than hearing.

Project 1 did have some shortcomings as it did not go the way we decided in the beginning due to the lack of time. Also, health issues were another factor, as I became sick by the end of week five and couldn't manage to pull it off the way I wanted. Still, we got the product, and we are happy.

Project 2 was the main challenging project this trimester from all the subjects done to date. The reason was that it had a lot of work input to be done, and time restrictions were another critical factor. But the most challenging part of this project was the recording day as we faced a lot of pressure and resource failures due to which we had to travel in unconventional ways, yet received the best output later on. Time constraints and financial investments were the most challenging part as both were delicate and could not be shifted or changed. But, on the project's final output, I am delighted, satisfied and proud that my mates and I pulled off a recording that was almost on the verge of failing that day.

Project 3, being the portfolio project, was almost ignored (hypothetical scenario) as it was just the uploading of what we did in the last two projects to the portfolio webpage.

The research and planning for all the projects were successful as we had intense group coordination skills, and each knew who was good at what, making things much more manageable. The group also had great internal rapport and sync due to us being the same in the team from the last trimester.

Serious and sincere Learning of deep audio knowledge has happened, and I will always be grateful to Kev for guiding me to the light.

Overall, I had a great experience doing this subject during this trimester, and I am always thankful to Kev for supporting and correcting me and my mates with all the ideas and mistakes we made.

I expect more to learn in the upcoming trimester as it goes, 'Learning never ends!

Thank You!
