Process

We, The Colliflowers was an idea born out of the desire to showcase local musical talent within the Northern Rivers. The Colliflowers are a young up-and-coming indie-surf rock band that, whilst only being together for the last 12-months, have blazed their trail into the highly competitive Australian indie-rock music scene. From playing weddings and bar gigs, to headline shows and packed crowds, to festival line-ups, The Colliflowers are musicians, entertainers, showman, and great mates.

Five weeks of pre-production, organisation, scheduling, and re-scheduling culminated in the 10-days of shooting live shows, rehearsals, musical conceptualisation, and interviews; eventuating in the hundreds of hours of post-production and editing, ultimately leaving the final product.

A key factor that sets this production apart from others of its like is the fact that midway through the production period of this film, the vast majority of the footage that had been shot was irreparably corrupted, meaning that over 600gb of film was lost forever. Despite this fairly significant setback, and a highly constricted timeline, Lora and Heath were able to reorganise the production and reshoot necessary aspects, leaving only a couple of weeks to translate over a tera-byte of raw footage into a comprehensible 10-minute presentations, resulting in the film you see today.

Collaborations

We would like to give a special thankyou to Daniel Pereira, Gary Collocott, Alex Pereira, Rachael Goddard, Nelson Ludeke, Nath Luke, and The Byron Bay Beach Hotel.

Without their assistance this documentary would not be what it is.

Reflection

Over the course of the past 13-weeks there have been ups and downs and turn-arounds with this production. Rarely can a film with such a constricted timeline recover from having the vast majority of footage irreparably corrupted. However, both Lora and Heath took this challenge on headfirst and used it as motivation to prove the disbelievers wrong.

The most notable aspect of this production is the relationships that are developed with the subjects of the documentary. To truthfully explore the creative process of any practitioner, that individual must be at ease to explore creative choices that may or may not work as intended. As such, both Lora and Heath had to develop a strong relationship with the band members so as to act as a fly-on-the-wall during their jam sessions, song writing, and musical composition. The band must feel comfortable to explore their process.

Both Heath and Lora are stoked with what they have achieved with this film, and are proud to be showcasing the brilliant local talent of The Colliflowers.
