Project synopsis:

This project required all the sound to be replaced (dialogue, sound effects, foley and music).

I have taken a scene from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and replaced all the audio with new, original sound.

As a massive Harry Potter fan, I was inspired by all the possibilities to create my version of magical sound effects and add a different twist to the original. At the same time, I wanted to stay true to the character voices, which added another challenge!

Hannah Buck and Ed Bambach, both students in the Music degree programme, worked together with me on this project. They composed the scene's musical score.

This collaboration allowed us to brainstorm distinct ideas and required working between different DAWs. Both Hannah and Ed are wonderful people to collaborate with. It's a dream come true when you find colleagues to work with that are not only creative but also highly organised!

ADR Cast

Other SAE students provided their assistance and vocal talent for the character voices. Even senior audio lecturer Kevin Hay graciously gave up his time and became involved.

  • Harry Potter: Brock Child (Audio student)

  • Wormtail/Peter Pettigrew: Lewis JPD (Music student)

  • Voldemort: Luke Bonner (Music student)

  • Cedric Diggory: Kevin Hay (Senior Audio Lecturer)

  • Lucius Malfoy: Kevin Hay

In The Studio

Some items used for SFX

Many different textures were required throughout the clip. I recorded a variety of sounds that I could manipulate once inside Pro Tools. For e.g. rubbing tin cans together, throwing things into jelly and my dogs eating bones 🐶

Recording footsteps

There were plenty of footsteps and movements to recreate. I wore different shoes for each character

Other Tools for Sound Design:

Iris 2

Making different SFX in Izotope Iris 2

RX9

Dialogue Contour was a feature in RX9 used to alter the inflection of specific parts of the ADR in order to achieve a performance close to the original.

Other Collaboration

In addition to my unit projects, throughout this trimester, I had the opportunity to collaborate with fellow audio student Crystal Wilkes on the production of an animated short film named Road to Pride which is expected to be released for the 2023 Mardi Gras. The production was constructed using Unreal Engine, and Epic Games provided sponsorship. The filmmakers made the interesting decision to present the story without using any dialogue, which meant that the music (which Crystal composed) and effects played an essential part.

It was a fantastic learning experience for me because I had never worked on a "real world" animation project before. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Crystal, given the energy and originality she brings to the table; I hope we'll have the opportunity to work together again soon!

Reflection

Working independently on some of the more group-oriented assignments has been difficult at times. Throughout the trimester, there have been some notable obstacles, and not all of the projects have gone as expected! However, whilst there have been challenges, my proficiency in Pro Tools has advanced to a higher level, I've enhanced my knowledge of RX9, and I believe I've improved my overall audio skillset as a result.

I want to express my appreciation to my lecturer, as well as the other members of the SAE faculty, my fellow students, and the SAE staff for providing me with continual encouragement and insightful feedback on my work. I'm looking forward to the next trimester.
