There is a new pope. But you may be asking what is the Pope? Who is he? And why is he important to the Catholic faith? All these questions and more are going to be answered. Also, if you haven’t heard, this is the first pope from the United States.
The Catholics believe that Jesus is the king of the heavens and earth, and the pope is kind of like the prime minister. They believe Saint Peter is the first pope. He is also there to lead the community of the Catholic faith. So far, there have been 266 popes.
The last pope has unfortunately died. So there needs to be a successor, so the red cardinals had a meeting to decide the new pope. If you don’t know, white smoke comes out of the Vatican when they have decided on a pope, and black smoke comes out when they haven’t. After 1 day of discussion (one of the shortest discussion times ever) the cardinals picked Pope Robert. He later took the name Pope Leo XIV. He has origins from the United States, which is the first pope to be from here. He was elected on May 8, 2025, at the Vatican City.
This is what he looked like when he walked out of the Vatican
This was the Pope at a very young age
During his childhood, his family knew he was going to be a pastor, not a pope. The pope grew up in a small suburb of Dolton, Illinois. He was a common boy. He was born Robert Prevost. He attended a catholic school called St. Mary. He is known as a hometown hero in his childhood town.
From jokes about him being a White Sox fan to the talk of the town in Dolton, this pope is the first American pope and should be celebrated. Pope Leo XIV says, “ Brothers and sisters, I would like for it to be our first desire to unite the church.”
