Violins of Hope Concert

Musicians performed a “Concert of Hope” on Monday, April 17, at Prairie State College to honor those who played violins before and during the tragedies that beset the Jewish people during the Holocaust and World War II. Musicians from the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the South Suburban College Orchestra performed for the free concert held in the Barnes & Noble College Auditorium.

Message from Dr. Michael D. Anthony

Hello All,

Open House was a tremendous success! Thank you to all who played a role in the execution of this event, including Beth Wyack, Gabby Diestelmeier, Student Affairs, Jeri Bingham, and the Marketing and Communications team. Thank you to all who came out to represent PSC and share information about our programs and services -- I am proud to be part of such an outstanding and dedicated group and thrilled with how we continue to grow as a community.

In less than a month, our graduating class will walk the stage with their heads held high as they transition to the next phase of their careers and educational journeys. This cohort of students has reshaped our institution and will leave us better than when they came, as they have created an unprecedented legacy here at PSC. Our men’s soccer program won the first-ever national championship at PSC. Our dental hygiene program, the only one of its kind in suburban Cook County,  provides much-needed health care to our wonderful community. Its work, along with the effort from our faculty and staff, has helped secure funding to continue to enhance our already state-of-the-art dental hygiene facility. Our class of future nurses continues to put us in the upper echelon of community colleges.

Our faculty, staff, and administration are working to ensure the next generation of Pioneers will be even better prepared than this one. I am ecstatic about what is to come as we pioneer forward with new ideas, concepts, and plans to improve PSC. For now, please know I am grateful for all we have accomplished, and it could not have been achieved without your hard work and passion for this institution.

Summer is rapidly approaching, and I love how we are turning our vision into a reality one day at a time. The beautiful summer weather will allow us all to recharge after a dynamic, successful school year at PSC. I hope you spend plenty of time with your friends and loved ones because you deserve it.

Thank you for all you do.

Dr. Michael Anthony

Community College Month Highlight | Chief Anthony Martin

April was Community College Month, and we featured students, staff, and faculty to share why PSC matters.

One of the best things about attending PSC is the flexibility and cost efficiency. Attending a community college costs approximately 50% less than a university, and the concerns about student housing are eliminated by living at home.

Students who want to save money, explore their options, and those who wish to improve their grade point average before going to a four-year institution have better opportunities at PSC.

Also, community colleges offer more flexibility. It is easier to change majors and move into curriculum choices you enjoy at a community college versus a university.

Check your PSC email for other highlights shared throughout April.

Special Funding Requests

The Foundation is pleased to support a number of special project requests from faculty this year, including:

Amount funded: $1,990.00

Art Institute of Chicago: University Partnership Program: In 2017, the Foundation enrolled Prairie State College into the University Partnership Program, which provides free admission to the Art Institute of Chicago for all employees and students for one year. Post-pandemic, the Foundation has shared these costs with Academic Affairs and Human Resources.

Amount funded:  $834.00

Communication Day:  The Foundation has supported Communication Day since 2018, except for COVID years when the event was not held. The Foundation provides Barnes & Noble Bookstore gift cards that students can use for future textbook purchases.

Eligible students will be determined by the faculty.

Amount funded:  $240.00

Speech Team – Washington, D.C. Monument Night Tour:  Six students attending the Phi Rho Pi national forensics tournament learned the history of Washington, D.C., while visiting the monuments of our nation’s founders and heroes from our great military conflicts. The tour highlights our country's history and the architectural prowess that resulted in the monuments, landmarks, and other significant markers of our history. Since the students competed by day, it would have been challenging to visit these landmarks, but the tour would permit them to see most, if not all, quickly.

World’s tallest building designed by a female architect, Jeanne Gang

It may not be the tallest building in Chicago (that honor goes to the Willis Tower, at 110 stories) but the 82-story Aqua is the tallest structure in the world to be designed by a woman, architect Jeanne Gang. According to the architect, its outstretched balconies reference the limestone outcrop features commonly found in the great lakes region — and serve the practical purpose of creating excellent views for residents!
