July/August 2021 Newsletter

Message from The President

Colleagues:

I hope you are having a great summer so far. Many of you have recently taken or will soon take a vacation -- enjoy and be sure to stay safe. As we approach a new academic year, I want to let you know that PSC has retained our commitment to a safe environment that has held us in good stead throughout the pandemic. We are actively implementing safety measures to keep our students and employees protected while on campus.

Thanks to the COVID-19 Task Force, who we rely on to provide recommendations to guide our decisions concerning PSC’s COVID-19 protocols. Please note the following updates regarding how we plan to forge ahead.

Based on the CDC's recently updated guidance, face masks will continue to be required for the fall term for all faculty, staff, administrators, students, and visitors. For more on our mask protocol, visit our site on Prairie State College Mask Protocols.

While the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) and Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) issued recommendations strongly encouraging colleges and universities to require COVID-19 vaccinations for students and employees, PSC is not yet mandating students and staff to get vaccinated. However, we strongly encourage you to get the vaccine to protect yourself and the community and enable us to have a safe on-campus experience at PSC this fall. In addition, our Human Resources team is working with Cook County to provide a pop-up vaccination clinic(s) on campus. Details will be shared with the college community.

With the exception of Allied Health and Dental Hygiene courses, most classes will be held at 50 percent capacity this fall to help maintain a safe environment for our students and faculty.

Relative to enrollment, we are 12 percent ahead of last year in registrations. Although a COVID year, I’m so pleased that as we strengthen our fiscal house in a pandemic, we are productive and contribute to the community at a high level.

I am encouraged when I enter the main building in the morning and see prospective students in the waiting area for appointments. These individuals have made prior appointments or are walk-ins. Under the leadership of Dean Jaime Miller, academic advising, enrollment services, financial aid, and the business office have reprised Saturday Rapid Registration events, providing another convenient time for students to enroll.

I cannot forget the other summer facilities projects that are underway. The Police Department relocation will provide adequate space for Campus Police operations, better vehicular access and less crowding at the main entrance. The main entrance (door M5) will be improved and the atrium ceiling repaired. Then we will collaboratively redesign the main atrium space. A big project underway is the dental hygiene lab renovation with new operatories, and the nursing SIM lab is being expanded.

Classes begin on August 23. We continue to review all federal, state, and local guidelines and recommendations regarding best safety practices. Please read more about parking and door access below.

More information is forthcoming. As we look forward to tradition at PSC and custom, we realize that safety must be the overriding umbrella of strategy. For example, while I want to return to a “together” convocation for all employees, the mingling we love to do could be less safe -- so still virtual in many respects. Things are ever-changing.

Please continue to wear your mask, wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, and maintain a safe distance from others. Also, if you are sick or exhibiting cold or flu-like symptoms, please stay home, or notify your supervisor that you need to leave work immediately.

Remember that we are all in this together.

Dr. Thomas Saban

Access to Campus Facilities:

Restrictions will be lessened to allow staff, students and visitors greater flexibility in parking choices and how to enter the main campus buildings. Currently all students and staff are entering the M-5 South Door of main building, which provides greatest access to and from Lot A where current

parking is allowed for students and staff.

Additional doors that will be open beginning August 9, 2021:

  • M-36 East Conference Center Provides access to the lot C and D.

  • A-1 ATOC Southeast door access from c and d lot. (West door may also be opened)

  • HT-1 Health Tech West door for those who have access keys.

Access to these doors are subject to change. The college campus will be notified if changes are made.

EMT Graduation Ceremony

On July 29, Prairie State College hosted it’s 138th Emergency Medical Technician graduation. Prairie State College has been training emergency health care workers to serve our community for almost fifty years. Nineteen students graduated with Hannah Kowalczyk as the Valedictorian of the class.

For those who are back on campus full time, please remember to change your voicemail and email signatures to reflect that the college is now open.

Secretary of State Update:

Our glorious weather dovetails with the successful deployment of our Secretary of State DMV. Primarily due to the efforts of our Campus Police and Facilities, the SOS has been a success. Thousands have come onto campus who may not otherwise have visited and viewed our promotional videos upon entering the DMV.

The Campus Police officers are adept with expected safety and security protocols and customer service, as we have seen throughout the pandemic. Their approach to patrons is clear, concise, and caring.

With the DMV, Campus Police are asked to extend their coverage into support for the SOS operations and their patrons on campus. Campus Police do this with a positive, attentive attitude. As I mentioned to Officer Cansino, after hearing his and other officers’ guidance to patrons as they roll up to the DMV each morning: you give outstanding customer service.

Because of our Police and Facilities and Grounds, people love the DMV service on campus and often congregate on-site during the nice weather as family members wait and kids play. Many residents have never been on campus and are impressed with the grounds, buildings, and the DMV service at this location. I’m not sure how long the Secretary of State will stay as their refurbished location is renovated.

Solar Project:

Our solar project will restart after a long hiatus. We are committed to enabling a renewable energy future at PSC and training students to qualify for green jobs in the south suburbs. Solar installer jobs are good-paying, fast-growing, and do not require a four-year degree. The college's rooftop solar array will turn PSC into a living laboratory for students enrolled in our new renewable energy courses. This academic program will provide students with the hands-on knowledge required by solar employers. Administratively, solar will provide $25k annually in energy savings.

Students seeking a certificate or associate degree in solar photovoltaics (in the Industrial Electrician program) will have access to the array and its production data to understand the realities of solar, including optimal weather conditions, peak production hours, and months, optimal installation angle, effects of shading, etc. Along with the large rooftop array, the developer will provide a remote monitoring system and install a small, ground-level demonstration array to give students hands-on experience installing, wiring, and experimenting with solar panels.

Fire Science Program

Professor Chad Vliestra and Dean Megan Hughes have developed a dynamically growing firefighter training program. Diverse cohorts of students are recruited from fire districts across the south suburbs. This program resides hand-in-hand with the Emergency Medical Technician program, one of our highest enrolled certificates. We are moving to renovate the MAC for use by Fire Science and EMT, possibly criminal justice and a police academy. There is no local police academy. Our local police recruits go downstate, the Chicago Police Academy or College of DuPage, and those spots are filled quickly.

.

Nature Preserve

The Nature Preserve Trail will significantly improve accessibility to Prairie State College's Nature Preserve, allowing more people to benefit and learn from this natural asset. The new trail will be ADA-accessible and will not be susceptible to muddy conditions after it rains. The bridge from parking lot A to the trail helps the campus community access the Nature Preserve more directly while avoiding dangerous car-dominated routes. Colocating the trailhead with the existing outdoor exercise apparatus makes this ideal for a full-body workout with strength training on the equipment and the half-mile loop for cardio on the trail. Also, We are renewing our agreement with the University of IL agricultural extension to develop urban agriculture in the south suburbs.

A warm and grateful thank you to our Sustainability Coordinator, Joel Nightingale. Joel took us boundless steps toward a sustainable campus, and curriculum. Joel leads the Nature Preserve sustainable development, the solar installation and our Sustainability committee. Joel is heading “home” to Olympia, WA to pursue a career with the local public utility. We wish you the best, Joel!

Enrollment Guide:

The 2021 Fall Enrollment Guide is available online and will be mailed to every household and business in the PSC district. The Enrollment Guides also will be available in the designated racks around campus.

WGCI Radio Spot:

An ad was placed with WGCI to promote fall registration including information about our Lake County Discount.

Bus Shelters Advertising:

You may have noticed our new bus shelters on your commute to campus. The fall shelters feature our very own Deneen Brackett, Jennica Rodriguez and Carmen Dover.

New Tesla for the Automotive Technology Program

Prairie State College's Automotive Technology program is preparing its students for the cars of the future by training them on electric and hybrid vehicles.

This Tesla Model 3 and a new hybrid vehicle trainer will give students the hands-on experience they need to confidently service the high-voltage systems of electrified vehicles.
