Message from The President

Colleagues -

Our February Board meeting was lively and upbeat as the Board conferred the award of tenure to five professors. A newly tenured Dr. Thomas cited the renovated laboratories as one important reason leading to his professorship at PSC. Each professor gave a riveting testimony of their career leading up to tenure at PSC.

Congratulations to our newly appointed tenured faculty members: Ms. Rebecca Buckle, Assistant Professor, Dental Hygiene; Ms. Laura Guill, Assistant Professor and Coordinator, Adult Basic Education and Secondary Education; Mr. Michael Massengill, Assistant Professor, Economics; Dr. Johnson Thomas, Assistant Professor, Biology, Ms. Denita Williams, Assistant Professor, Certified Nursing Assistant and Nursing. We applaud you for this excellent achievement.

Jan Bonavia, director, Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Accreditation presented the strategic plan, including progress on academic and administrative initiatives. The nature trail project and the hybrid vehicle trainer program were enthusiastically approved by our Board.

Truck Driving training will commence when over-the-road training is authorized. We have identified an instructor and have the curriculum. We will generate credit hour reimbursement from the state using this approach.

I want to encourage employees in areas that are being re-envisioned and consolidated to consider those positions in areas critical to the future at PSC, including those internal positions in ITR, instructional technology, and student services. This is where we need staff, and growth is occurring. For example, in ITR, we are finishing the implementation of Ellucian Analytics ( robust dashboard and much more), Target X (client /student relationship management system), moving single sign-on to the cloud, and the wireless upgrade taking place now. Also, please visit the new PSC Online learning webpage authored by Lirim Neziroski and the IT committee.

Relative to fall classes, we are considering the requirements and importance of easing back into face-to-face instruction and in-person services. As always, we will put safety first. More on this is forthcoming.

Relative to the Atrium project, we are going to start with the student entrance. Currently, we are deploying welcome center staff there along with our Police and other student-focused staff members. Our students often require a personal connection to stay enrolled, especially during the pandemic. Students who are used to a social environment may feel disconnected. It is often the resources at PSC that lead students to success and completion. Please remember, as we deploy our financial aid awards this fall, students often choose the first college from which they receive a financial award. We want to make that college PSC!

Black history month was filled with exceptional events hosted by our faculty and staff! Just yesterday, the college hosted an African American Read-In and welcomed Dr. Vay of Waterloo University, who came to our virtual campus to speak about his scholarship in sociolinguistics and his work in the field of code-meshing. During this week’s Board meeting, a caller gave high reviews for the Divine Nine event -- a conversation about the Black Greek experience -- and thanked the college for the opportunity to attend. Thanks to everyone who played a role in hosting these important events. What a great way to keep our students and community engaged in the celebration of black excellence.

I plan to host a Town Hall in March. At this meeting, I will discuss the State of the College, including a budget update and re-opening plans. All those in attendance will get the chance to ask questions. An invitation will be sent soon.

Below you'll find updates, announcements, and more.

Have a great weekend -

Thomas D. Saban, Ph.D., Interim President

March is Women's History Month

College Updates:

Summer Classes:

Summer classes will be virtual except for labs. Students who are already coming to campus for labs will be permitted to stay on campus to study. The study sessions will be monitored to ensure that students follow building guidelines of social distancing and wearing their masks. The College will move gradually towards a hybrid model, combining face to face and remote instruction.

Athletics:

Several of our athletic programs are currently training to compete in the fall, providing conditions continue to improve. I fully expect to see our men’s soccer team in the national playoffs again in 2022.

Communications and Marketing

Take a look at the Virtual Department Tours now live on the PSC website. Visitors can explore the different departments to get an overview of the various offices at PSC.

The Public Relations and Marketing Department will now be using PhotoShelter, a digital asset management system, to create an easily searchable library of college imagery including marketing photos, event photos and more. This searchable library will help employees across the college quickly and easily identity and download the images they need.

Early College Initiative Pathways

The Allied Health and Emergency Services Division has been working closely with the PSC Recruitment and Outreach team Gabby Diestelmeier and Beth Wyack to develop additional Early College Initiative pathways with Jeff Bonomo at Rich High School District 227. Coordinator of Fitness and Exercise, Devon Lindsay, created a new path for students in Personal Training. Chad Vlietstra, Coordinator of Fire Science, developed a pathway for students interested in Fire Science. Gabby and Beth helped develop a health care pathway for students interested in our Allied Health programs. This expands the options for students, which already included CNA and Dental Assisting.

Anti-Racist Linguistic Justice Work

The CTL is thrilled to share that PSC is bringing two nationally-renowned scholars to our remote campus for work on anti-racist linguistic justice.

  • Dr. Vershawn Ashanti Young (Dr. Vay) will discuss linguistic practices with students and PSC community members. This is sponsored by the African and African American Studies Program and the Honors Program.

  • Through funding from the CARES Act grant, the Center for Teaching and Learning will host Dr. Vay's return in two follow-up workshops with faculty on pedagogical strategies.

  • Dr. Mya Poe will hold a workshop with faculty on actionable assessment practices.

  • The CTL will conclude with a Faculty Learning Community to deepen the ongoing work in Academic Affairs with these culturally sustaining teaching and assessment methods to influence future teaching and professional development at PSC.

Faculty in Focus: Music Production

The Communications and Marketing team is working on a series of Faculty in Focus videos that showcase programs at the College. Check out the latest video featuring Jonathan Pierre, Associate Professor, Music Production.

Diversifying the Fire Science Program- Chad Vlietstra, Prairie State College

“Professor Chad Vlietstra has been with Prairie State College since 2008, first as an adjunct professor and then as a full time professor in 2016. He is the Coordinator of our Fire Science program and also teaches HVAC courses. Under his leadership, the Fire Science program has grown exponentially, but what really stands out is his commitment to diversifying the fire service. In the past year, he has worked with the Workforce Equity Initiative to provide support to African American, Latino, female, and low income students who wish to pursue a career in Fire Science.

Professor Vlietstra is committed to intentional, substantive partnerships with the community and our professional partners. He has developed partnerships with Fire Departments throughout the region as well as our area high schools to develop pathways for high school students who are interested in exploring a career in the emergency services.

Professor Vlietstra is a truly outstanding faculty member and an advocate for CTE programs. He states ‘There is a real shortage of highly skilled workers in the Career-Tech fields that represent the backbone of our Country. The advocation0 and awareness of technical programs that give students real-world training that leads them to good-paying careers is more important now than ever. We need to build our CTE programs utilizing, early college opportunities, internships, real-world hands-on education and partnerships with community employers to remain successful in our outcomes.’"

ICCB Recognition: Gail Szewczyk

Professor Gail Szewczyk, Coordinator of Dental Hygiene

“Professor Gail Szewczyk is our Coordinator of Dental Hygiene. She truly goes above and beyond in her work at Prairie State College. She has worked tirelessly to advocate for opening our dental clinic safely so students and the community could access the services they need. She also coordinates our community dental program and has worked with students to develop innovative ways to meet the needs of the community with virtual programs and events. She has also been a part of the team working to plan our dental clinic renovation. In addition, she takes the time to personally tutor struggling students even when the college is on break, to make sure they can pass their licensing exams. She is an amazing advocate for our students and the program. ”
