Hello all,
The fall semester was filled with incredible academic accomplishments, noteworthy achievements, and unprecedented events. Most recently, our men’s soccer team delivered PSC the ultimate present winning the NJCAA Division II National Championship in Arizona. The team’s journey is one of the many examples of this College's success in 2022.
I’m confident in 2023, we will continue to surge forward. We will build our brand showing PSC is a destination for students near and far who want to affordably get to a four-year university or increase their earning power by seeking out opportunities to start a new career. We have campus renovations and improvements happening all around us, along with faculty and staff, who will continue to work to ensure our students are ready for the next stage of their lives.
We have all poured time and energy into our work, students, and community. Thank you again for being selfless when it would be easy to be selfish. You all are what makes PSC a place people want to be.
I wish all of you the best over this holiday break and hope you all return rested and recharged as we continue to improve this tremendous College.
Happy Holidays!
Season's Greetings and Happy New Year to the PSC Community. We've had a tremendous year and look forward to great things happening in 2023! Take a moment to view our Holiday Video Card!
Thanks to everyone who attended the Holiday Cocoa & Cheer event held on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Over 100 employees stopped by the staff lounge for hot cocoa and holiday cheer. Each person who RSVPed and attended the event was eligible for raffle prizes. Congratulations to the winners! If you still need to retrieve your prize, please stop by HR. Employees who RSVPed but could not attend will have their gift delivered to their mailbox in Support Services. Special thanks to the marketing team for pulling this event together, HR and the president's office for supporting this effort, and Cheron Ricks for assisting with raffle prizes. #wearepsc
On November 18, PSC hosted the Building Partnerships Mini-Conference, a collaboration initiated in 2017 by Dean Megan Hughes when she was a faculty member. This conference brings together English teachers and administrators from local high schools to help build relationships with faculty of PSC, learn from one another, and better align what we do in the classroom. This year we hosted teachers and administrators from Bloom, Bloom Trail, Crete-Monee, Homewood-Flossmoor, and Rich Township high schools.
Laura Guill, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Adult Basic and Secondary Education, delivered the keynote address, "Transitioning to College Writing." Professor Guill shared an overview of the Adult Education course she developed and is teaching at the college. Professor Guill generously shared her philosophy of the course, sample assignments, examples of student work. Teachers were eager to borrow her ideas.
This fall's conference was hybrid--we had seven virtual attendees and 18 in-person. Jason Evans said he is grateful to our wonderful and talented staff, who helped make guests feel welcome. Evans gave special thanks to Kathryn Hanrahan, Esther Pacheco, Donna Rokicki, and Renee' Bickett.
PSC's Model Illinois Government team held a legislative committee training session on Wednesday, December 7, in preparation for the annual Statewide Model Illinois Government competition. The Purdue University Northwest Model Illinois Government team members joined the training session.
During the session, students role-played legislators, both Democratic and Republican, debating a bill that, if approved, would have allowed public school districts to conduct firearm safety courses on school premises.
Prior to the pandemic, our affiliation with the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) served as an essential resource for our students enrolled in Studio Art and Art Appreciation classes, as well as students enrolled in our African/African American Studies program. We are pleased to announce that Prairie State College has recently renewed its affiliation with the AIC through the University Partners Program and that the benefits are available to all employees and students. Below is a list of benefits provided by the University Partners Program, and a list of current and upcoming special exhibitions at the Museum for the 2022-23 season.
Free admission for all PSC students and employees with a Prairie State College ID
Two exclusive family events per academic year (be on the lookout for an announcement)
Concierge service for planned class or group visits to the museum (must be arranged in advance)
10% discount on first-time memberships for students, staff, and faculty
Invitation to annual Jobs at Art Museums (JAM) event, a full day of museum career-focused programming for students
The Art Institute of Chicago has an amazing permanent collection of art and design from across the globe that spans from Ancient Egypt to works created by living practitioners. It also hosts a multitude of Special Exhibits that bring a diverse array of practices and interests to Chicago each season.
There is literally something for everyone at the AIC, whether your interest is history, diverse cultures, psychology, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, religion, literature, communications, music, mathematics, the natural sciences, engineering, photography, technology, health professions, and more.
The Art Department wishes to acknowledge the generous support of the PSC Foundation, the Division of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and the Department of Human Resources for funding this partnership.
