The 2025 Black History Month Planning Committee organized impactful events to honor the significance of Black culture and to recognize the significant contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history. This year's theme was "We're Not Going Back." Throughout the month, students and staff engaged in various activities, including a public bulletin board dedicated to sharing inspirational figures, readings focused on African American literature, and networking events. The month concluded with our inaugural Black Excellence Achievement Awards on Friday, February 28, in the Conference Center.

The Prairie State College Nursing program has achieved a remarkable 100% NCLEX pass rate for the 2024 testing cohort! While the Class of 2024 recorded a 94% pass rate, the overall group of PSC nursing students who tested in 2024 achieved a perfect score. Dr. Marie C. Hansel, Interim Director of Nursing, attributed this success to the dedication of students, faculty, and staff, along with the program's rigorous curriculum and hands-on training. PSC’s commitment to developing a skilled, diverse nursing workforce is reflected in its support of students from all backgrounds, including those from its predominantly Black and emerging Hispanic community.
Our partnership with the Career Preparation Network (CPN) was recently approved by the Illinois Education and Career Success Network as a Leadership Community.
This acknowledges the College’s increased emphasis on supporting our local high school students, strengthening the local workforce, and growing Career and Technical Education (CTE) enrollment. Furthermore, this now affords both our high school districts and PSC students with many opportunities, both in academic development and pathways to reduced cost postsecondary education and associated scholarships.
All credit for the formal application is given to Dr. Ty Jiles, Dean of Career, Training and Education who worked with our CPN leadership to get this done.
As students returned to campus, they were greeted with a series of fun activities, organized by Student Engagement and FYE, all designed to help them socialize and start the semester on a positive note. The week kicked off with warm beverages and a creative vision board session. Students were then encouraged to focus on achieving a healthy school-life balance through a workshop led by Dr. Desiree Anderson in the library. To wrap up the week, students mingled and tested their PSC knowledge while enjoying snacks.
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs & Diversity, Dr. Desiree Anderson, led an interactive workshop titled "Balancing Life and College" to help students learn tips for effective time management, stress reduction, and prioritizing self-care. These initiatives support students and help them thrive academically and personally. Dr. Anderson took questions and gave personal anecdotes to show attendees that balancing does not stop after they have finished their journey as students.
During the fall 2024 semester, the PSC Library began replacing outdated furniture to better meet the needs of our students and community. Dean William Condon and Dawn Sterning introduced flexible, mobile furniture with charging stations and noise-reducing layouts. The renovation reflects the shift from quiet study areas to collaborative spaces. Additionally, Parker’s Den, a zero-sensory study space, was added for students seeking a calm environment. Read this month's edition of the PSC Library’s monthly newsletter to learn more.
The PSC Black History Month celebrations included an African Drum and Dance Workshop in the renovated Fitness Studio, where students participated in live drumming and dance instruction. Many students attended to learn about African culture, dance, and music, which are rich traditions that are integral to Black history and culture.
In celebration of Black History Month, students and staff enjoyed classic soul food dishes like fried catfish, collard greens, and cornbread. Instruction and Research Librarian Assistant Diane Anderson presented on the cultural and historical significance of these foods and highlighted related books, which are available in the PSC Library. Her insights covered the family traditions and resilience behind the dishes. PSC Student Ambassador Aakeeia interviewed attendees about their favorite soul food—check out her video below!
TRIO Upward Bound hosted Black Boy Joy, an event that celebrated the strength, resilience, and joy of Black men and their diverse experiences. Special guest speaker Bobby Simmons shared his inspirational journey through the National Basketball Association (NBA), his entrepreneurial successes, insights on fatherhood, and the lessons he learned during college. The event provided an opportunity for attendees to uplift one another, celebrate Black culture, and empower future generations.
The Soft Girl Era event was a celebration of self-care, inner peace, and feminine empowerment. Attendees explored how to prioritize themselves, manifest a life of ease, and embody patience in every moment. The event featured activities including making flower bouquets, completing worksheets focused on self-actualization, snacks, a photo booth, and meaningful conversations. The experience was a reminder to embrace self-love, femininity, and the superpowers that come from within.
PSC students, high schoolers, and community members attended the recent Transfer Fair and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Presentation, and got the opportunity to explore their transfer options at multiple colleges and universities. Before the Transfer Fair, the PEACE Center organized an HBCU event featuring representatives from various institutions. HBCUs play an important role in our nation's history and continue to be pillars of culture, history, and social change. As part of Black History Month, the PEACE Center recognizes our PSC faculty and staff who are proud HBCU alumni.

On January 24, our team gathered to celebrate the retirement and birthday of longtime employee Donna Rokicki. Donna dedicated 24 years of service as the Mail/Duplication Clerk, overseeing mail operations and handling duplication requests. While advances in technology made her job easier, Donna always preferred the hands-on approach, finding peace of mind in knowing things were done right. She cherished many memories from her time at Prairie State, often reminiscing about holiday celebrations and the annual 5K event. Donna was always ready to help, whether calling students or greeting guests with a warm smile. As a proud Prairie State alumna, Donna's contributions and positive spirit will be missed by all. We wish her the best in her well-deserved retirement!

Here are their glowing remarks: "These two individuals have consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant and engaged campus community at Prairie State College. During the recent fall semester, Cristina and Juanita orchestrated a remarkable series of programs that not only energized our campus but also empowered students and employees to become active and responsible citizens. Their innovative efforts encompassed a diverse range of initiatives, including voter registration drives, comprehensive voter education workshops, impactful activism projects, and enriching service-learning opportunities. Through their tireless dedication and collaborative spirit, Cristina and Juanita forged strong partnerships with academic affairs, student affairs, and esteemed community organizations. This collaborative approach yielded a remarkable outcome: the successful implementation of over ten impactful programs aimed at advancing the well-being of our broader community."
Over the past year, amidst several vacancies within Business Services, Ms. Ricks has been instrumental in assisting the Student Affairs Division with managing numerous state and federal grant requirements. Her dedication ensured the uninterrupted provision of vital services and support to students served by these grants, fostering positive experiences as they navigate their college journey. The state frequently requires information with minimal notice, and Ms. Ricks consistently makes herself readily available to the Student Affairs team, providing invaluable support in meeting these compliance and reporting requirements.
