Message from The President

Colleagues, Happy Graduation Season!

This week was filled with events, beginning with Monday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the temporary Secretary of State Drivers Facility in the Prairie Center. The facility is now open to the public. We are privileged to partner with the Illinois Secretary of State to provide this important service in our community.

Kudos to Tim Kosiek and especially John Woodyatt, who became the go-to person with the SOS. Facilities and SOS staff converted the Prairie Center to a DMV. Greg Kain coordinated the network with Jenny and DeShawn, who hooked up the connections. It turns out to be the PSC Police who have assumed the ongoing responsibility...as it seems they always do….Chief Martin has expressed his appreciation by sending citations to each officer. We can be secure with the accommodating and cheerful yet very serious safety and security coverage by our campus police.

This year, we will again host a virtual commencement ceremony. To celebrate our students, the commencement committee organized a drive-up “grad box” distribution. Students received commemorative items to help them celebrate their achievements. Thanks to all who have volunteered to stuff and distribute the commencement boxes for the Class of 2021!

Two nursing pinning ceremonies were held in person yesterday, socially distanced with limited capacity. The event was also streamed live on Facebook. What an outstanding achievement and memorable moment for all of our nursing graduates. If you missed the ceremony, the link is provided below.

We are looking forward to tomorrow’s commencement ceremony. This year’s speaker is PSC Alumnus Emmanuel López. Emmanuel López is a “spark plug” of a leader. He’s an excellent communicator. You’ll see tomorrow. He served as president of student government and is a strong PSC advocate. Emmanuel served on the Prairie State College Foundation Board of Directors. We are pleased to welcome him as the 2021 Commencement Speaker.

The commencement ceremony will air at 2 p.m. tomorrow, May 15. The link is provided on the PSC Commencement Page.

Below you’ll find updates, announcements, and more.

Have a great weekend -

Thomas D. Saban, Ph.D., Interim President

Masks are still required at PSC

Yesterday, the CDC announced that people who are fully-vaccinated will "no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance. "

Prairie State College will continue to require all individuals to wear a mask while on campus and in public spaces on campus (hallways, bathroom, staff lounge, shared-spaces, etc). Any changes to this requirement will be communicated to the campus community.

Lockport Summer Art Series

Lockport puts together a summer art series each year; due to the pandemic, small businesses have struggled. Because of this, they decided to do something for the businesses in Lockport and came up with keeping businesses afloat.

Associate Professor, Visual Communications/Multimedia Arts Rebecca Slagle, was one of 22 artists commissioned to put artwork on one of the fiberglass ducks. Rebecca used a fully converted camera to see full-spectrum light and various filters to let in certain amounts of infrared light. Because the object was a duck, she chose photos that she has taken in nature and quite a few that have water in the scene. Rebecca says it was a great experience. While challenging at times, she couldn't be more happier with the end result!
