Hispanic Heritage Month

At Prairie State College, we proudly celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month as a vibrant and inclusive tribute to the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. This month-long celebration, from September 15 to October 15, provides a platform for our college community to engage in meaningful dialogue, explore diverse perspectives, and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Hispanic heritage.

Our college recognizes that Hispanic and Latinx individuals have significantly shaped and influenced every aspect of society, including art, music, literature, science, politics, and business. By celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we aim to honor these communities' exceptional achievements, resilience, and vibrant traditions.

We firmly believe that celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is not limited to a single month but rather serves as a catalyst for year-round efforts to promote inclusivity, diversity, and social equity. We invite all members of our college community to join us in honoring and celebrating Hispanic culture, encouraging dialogue and mutual respect, and working together towards a more inclusive and equitable future.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we sat down with Jennica Rodriguez, Director, PEACE (Pride Equity Access Cultural Exchange) Center, to ask a few questions.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

I feel proud and I celebrate being Latina all year long but it’s nice to have a month where all kinds of places, institutions, schools really use it as a time to highlight our culture and offer programming and events that will help us celebrate.

How will the new PEACE Center help the Hispanic students at PSC?

The goal with the PEACE Center is for me to bring programming to the college similar to this but for other groups as well and create a safe space for students overall. We want to get students to think about these kinds of things and get them the extra support they need… We celebrate where they come from, what they’re trying to do and let them know they have a safe space with us.

What do you love most about PSC?

The students. It’s always the students. The students, community we serve, we really have a unique opportunity here in the south suburbs. I absolutely love the students and families we serve. They’re hard-working and have high standards for themselves. They’re fun and really dedicated to make their lives and community better.

Last Movie you watched?

How do you take your coffee?

Decaf and I am a flavor person. I like to try different flavors. I’m that person when you see weird flavors at the stores and you wonder why companies spend money on making outlandish flavors - I’m that person who buys the weird flavors.

Team Android or iPhone?

iPhone

Favorite Food?

I can’t just pick one. My mom’s homemade chicken sopes and pozole, which is a hot stew, usually pork based with a spicy broth with hominy topped with things like cabbage, lime and oregano. It’s usually a winter dish but I can eat it when it’s 100 degrees out. I also like pizza.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I’m big on family and always with family whether it’s my husband and my son or my sisters and parents. All of us live really close to each other. I have a really funny family. I love spending time with them.

Where would you like to travel to?

One place I haven’t been able to travel to but I plan to go with my family is Colombia, because I hear what a great place it is in terms of the food and nightlife as well as the natural landscapes.

Expressive Geometry Reception

Prairie State College hosted an Artists' Reception for its Expressive Geometry exhibit. Artists James Bowden, Stephen Luecking, and Christopher Newman came to campus to talk to students and the community about the pieces they have on display in the Christopher Art Gallery. Bowden, Luecking, and Newman all use geometric forms and concepts in their artwork. Their inspirations vary, but these works evoke tension, energy, and beauty, all also found in natural forms.

Message from the President:

I hope you are all having a solid start to the fall semester. Our campus is already buzzing with activity. Involvement Fest and the recent artist receptions have been tremendous successes. I was particularly impressed by the remarkable talent on display during the student art reception. In fact, I purchased a piece of art to bring a part of PSC home with me. It is truly inspiring to witness the creativity and passion of our students.

We have more awesome things happening as we head into October. After an awesome first-ever homecoming for us last year, we look forward to the second one being even better. Our Marketing and Communications team is hard at work helping to plan an incredible Homecoming Week for our campus and community—more information to come on this. In the meantime, mark your calendars (Oct. 15-20), and I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Lastly, I want to bring your attention to an important matter. It is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and I want to emphasize the significance of prioritizing our mental health. At PSC, we have a wealth of resources available, and I encourage you to familiarize yourselves with the various ways we can offer support. Remember, we are here for you and will do everything possible to assist you.

Thank you all for your ongoing dedication and commitment to our College. Let's continue to strive for excellence together.

Dr. Anthony

Cabinet members came together to serve our students at Involvement Fest on August 31.

Dr. Anthony joined Joliet Junior College President Dr. Clyne Namuo and PSCVP of External Affairs Jeri Bingham at the Will County Center for the Economic Development board meeting—exciting discussions on fostering local growth and partnerships

Dr. Anthony attended the investiture of Dr. Brian Knetl, who was named 5th president of Waubonsee Community College.

Librarian Anderson Publishes Book Chapter

The library's newest colleague, Diane Anderson, Instruction & Research Librarian/Assistant Professor, wrote a chapter for a book, "Instructional Identities and Information Literacy." In this chapter, she wrote,

"Librarians cannot idly participate as instructors. We need to be aware of and reflect on each interaction with library patrons. How we teach should not be influenced by the number of patrons facing us. Each interaction has the potential to be a defining moment in a patrons life."

Communications Professors Attend ICTA Conference

Professors Joshua Green, Janine Stroemer, and Dana Trunnell of the Prairie State College Communication Department attended the Illinois Communication and Theatre Association (ICTA) Convention at Heartland Community College in mid-September. The conference is designed to bring communication educators and speech and debate team coaches together to advance the discipline and exchange classroom activities and recruitment and retention strategies.

Professor Trunnell is the outgoing President of the organization and will assume the role of Immediate Past President on the ICTA Board, while Professor Stroemer, who is also recently retired from coaching Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s speech team, was the most recent Immediate Past President. Professors Trunnell and Stroemer also served on this year’s convention-planning committee.

In addition to the robust participation of Prairie State faculty in the ICTA organization over the years, Prairie State serves as the home office of ICTA, with retired faculty member Ed Schwarz serving as the Executive Director.

Congratulations to Jonathan Pierre and Wife, Alecia.

Student Hightlight

Jasmine Jeandenis

Jasmine is a sophomore at PSC and very active in the Student Government Association (SGA), Black Student Union, and she has been nominated to be recognized by Nicole Price, Financial Aid Processor. Here is what Price had to say about the thriving student.

"Jasmine has visited the Financial Aid Office quite a few times, and each time she comes in with the biggest smile and the most positive attitude. I have seen her throughout the college and she has the same smile and great attitude. I have witnessed her being helpful to other students, whether it's through encouragement or just simply helping someone find the office they're trying to get to.

She was recently given the opportunity to give a group of new students a tour and they stopped by the Financial Aid Office. They caught me in the hallway and asked if I'd take a picture with the whole group. Of course, I did! Everyone was excited, and I believe her awesome personality had something to do with it. She's a bright young lady who is determined to succeed."

In alignment with the ongoing website redesign, atrium renovation, and other campus updates, the Marketing and Communications department, in collaboration with the President's Office and facilities, is actively involved in refreshing the aesthetics and overall appearance of PSC. Our primary goal is to create a more modern and contemporary look that reflects the evolving needs and aspirations of our institution.

Over the fall and spring semesters, you can expect to witness a series of changes. These updates will be visible across various aspects of PSC, including the website, campus signage, promotional materials, and more. We aim to enhance the visual identity of PSC and ensure consistency in branding and messaging.

We appreciate your patience and support during this transitional period and are excited to unveil the refreshed look. Stay tuned for further updates and announcements as we continue to enhance our campus and overall branding.

Office of Institutional Advancement and PSC Foundation

Employee Giving

It was an honor to celebrate the new academic year at convocation and to take a moment to give an update on employee giving. The new employee giving forms were distributed, and Deborah Havighorst, Executive Director, Institutional Advancement & Prairie State College Foundation, explained College employee giving has dropped significantly since pre-COVID. Currently, giving is at approximately 25%. The Foundation challenges employees to raise that percentage to 50% by the end of the year and challenges administrators and managers to raise their giving to 100%.

It was emphasized that the Foundation is not pushing the amount of employee donations. The Foundation feels this is a personal decision and wants employees to give at a level that feels right to them. The goal is to tell donors what percentage of employees donate to the Foundation—not the amount they donate. If the Foundation can tell donors at the end of the year that 50% of all employees and 100% of our administrators and managers support student scholarships through the Foundation, that has a significant impact on donor confidence. This shows donors that College employees believe in Prairie State College. If we can get to a point where ALL of our employees are giving something, that would be a huge success and something for which the entire College can be very proud.

If you are interested in donating via payroll deduction, please click here or the Employee Giving Payroll Deduction Form to the right.

Employees with questions are invited to stop by the Foundation offices, call ext. 7918, or email pscfoundation@prairiestate.edu.

Art Institute of Chicago University Partner Program

As University Partners of the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC), students and College employees are invited to visit the galleries and explore all that the museum has to offer. The AIC is highlighting some notable upcoming exhibitions, “like Dan Friedman: Stay Radical, which will include over 50 works drawn primarily from the Art Institute collection and will be the first museum retrospective focused on Dan Friedman’s extraordinary and underrecognized career. Additionally, students can look forward to Picasso: Drawing from Life, an exhibition centered on the artist’s works on paper, which focuses on Picasso’s life and art as it intersected with a network of artists, dealers, printers, family members, and lovers.” Faculty are invited to share these and other upcoming exhibitions with students and make plans to visit the AIC with them. The Foundation can assist with student transportation costs—faculty should contact the office for more information.

Next year’s University Partner Fest will be on February 24, 2024. Participants can look forward to joining students from the AIC University Partner schools for another year of gallery activations, museum insight, and student gallery talks. Be on the lookout for more updates as the year progresses, and make sure to add UPF 2024 to your calendar.

This season, the AIC is featuring a new slate of programming at the museum, including Artist Talks, Exhibition Presentations, and Gallery Tours. Earlier this summer, the AIC introduced Spanish Language tours at the museum Visitas Guiadas en Español, which were launched in conjunction with the recent Salvador Dali exhibition. The tours have continued to serve museum visitors who speak Spanish and are available to interested visitors. Check out the AIC’s Events Calendar for more information about these offerings to share with students.

The AIC can be an extension of the classroom or an academic department, whether or not a class is related to art. Complete the Gallery Activation for College and University Classes form, and someone will get back to you as soon as possible to connect with the educators in the Department of Interpretation regarding the best way to combine their expertise with yours to support the work of your students, your colleagues, and yourself.

Examples of collaborations might include working with a museum educator to design a gallery experience specific to a topic in your class, requesting recommendations of artworks in their collection that are relevant to your coursework, developing a workshop for faculty wishing to practice teaching with art objects, partnering on a study, and more.

African-American Women’s Scholarship Fund

Ms. Cheri Taylor-Lawton approached the Foundation about starting a scholarship fund for African-American women. The Foundation Board of Directors has determined not to start any new scholarship funds unless they are created with an endowment, which is a minimum donation of $10,000. Since the Foundation does not have a fund specifically directed at this vital group, it was decided to make an exception, and now numerous people are donating to this fund through employee payroll deductions and tributes. The funds will be collected and put in an account until it reaches $10,000, when it will officially be an endowed scholarship.

Anyone interested in donating to this fund or holding a “mini-fundraiser” to build up this fund should contact the Foundation.

John B. Abate Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Foundation is proud to announce that Associate Professor Brianna Abate’ and her family have started an endowed scholarship in memory of her late father, John B. Abate. Once the Foundation has held the initial investment for one year, the interest will be used to award scholarships. 85% of the investment income is put into an account from which the Foundation can award the scholarship; 10% of the earnings go back to the principal to help build the fund; and 5% is a fee charged by the Foundation as a management fee, and that goes to the general fund.

Tributes

Donors can have a personalized card sent to anyone they would like to honor, be it for a birthday, job promotion, anniversary, etc., for a minimum donation of $5 per tribute. Tributes can also be sent in memory of someone’s loved one, and the card will go to the intended recipient. This is a great way to let someone know you appreciate or are thinking of them. Tribute donations can go to any fund the donor chooses.
