Tell me you haven’t had one or more of these thoughts, or said one or more of these things (or all of the above), since last week. Prairie State is nothing if not…interesting. Can we all just take a pause to recognize and honor the shared trauma of our collective story these past four years? COVID, leadership transitions, power failures, bomb threats, weather emergencies, students lost and lost students, and asbestos (to name a few). Oh and cicadas. So...many...cicadas. Maybe you can find some humor in it all. Perhaps some anger. Probably a little teeny tiny bit of exhaustion.
I have felt all of these things. I have said all of these things. But you do know this is just part of our story, right? Keep reading.
Dr. Anthony recently attended the Annual Skyway Conference meeting and awards ceremony at Waubonsee Community College with Joe Belcaster, Director of Athletics, and Dr. Bernard Little, Vice President of Student Affairs and Diversity.
President Anthony also attended the Summer ICCTA Conference and Illinois Council of Community College Presidents meeting in Lombard. Participants engaged in insightful discussions and connected with exceptional leaders in higher education.
Prairie State College recently celebrated its 65th Annual Commencement. This year's speaker, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Elighie Wilson encouraged graduates to trailblaze into their future careers and educational endeavors with passion and fearlessness. Nursing is not merely a profession; it's a calling, a noble vocation that demands compassion, skill, and commitment to the well-being of all whom our students serve. We are incredibly proud of our graduates and their professors who worked to pass on their wealth of knowlege.
Our inaugural Lavender Graduation on May 16 was incredible! The ceremony presented a fun environment to acknowledge the unique experience of the LGBTQIA+ students and allies, celebrate their accomplishments, and see them on to the next stages of their lives. Congratulations to the PEACE Center for hosting such a memorable event. A special thanks to everyone who joined us to celebrate, support, and uplift our graduates!
On May 9, 2024, PSC students and employees gathered to prioritize their well-being in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month. A variety of stress-relieving activities were available to rejuvenate the mind and body, including massage chairs, plant-plotting stations, a juice bar, and essential oil blending. Everyone treated themselves to some much-needed TLC.

In celebration of May Day—International Workers Rights Day—President of Local 1600 Cheron Ricks and President of Local 3816 Andy Schott invited employees to enjoy cupcakes to commemorate the long history of Labor's struggle to secure humane working conditions, fair wages, and power through collective action.
The Recruitment and Outreach Department hosted High School Counselor Appreciation Day on April 12. During the event, the department presented all that PSC has to offer to counselors from H-F, Crete-Monee, Rich Township, and Bloom Township. Chad Vliestra and Nick Biasella from Emergency Services played key roles in organizing a field trip to the MAC to highlight the EMT and Fire Science Departments, along with our new Paramedicine program. Our local counselors thoroughly enjoyed participating in the demonstration stations.
Director of Athletics Joe Belcaster arranged transportation for the group and conducted a tour of the Prairie State College Fieldhouse. Additionally, we showcased grant opportunities for students with assistance from Brian Stanley (WEI) and Michelle Guiliani (PATH). The group also had the opportunity to visit the Nursing Lab with Dr. Marie Hansel and the Surgical Tech Lab with Heather Pevion.
The Marketing and Communications team invited students and employees to fuel up for a strong finish with complimentary beverages, including coffee, tea, and smoothies, provided by Coffee-n-Repeat.
Representatives from Prairie State College attended the 16th Annual Degrees of Impact Gala, benefitting One Million Degrees (OMD) and their mission of providing pathways towards success for OMD scholars.
Jennica Rodriguez, Director of the PEACE Center, participated as a panelist at the 10th Annual Share the Dream Conference held this year at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. The panel focused on sharing best practices and tips for effectively serving undocumented/DACA students in higher education institutions. Attendees included Undocumented Student Liaisons from Illinois Community Colleges, Public Universities, and Private Universities. Jennica collaborated with other panelists such as Eric Ruiz, Vice President of Enrollment Services at the University of St. Francis, and Pedro Nungaray, Associate Dean of Support Services at Harold Washington College, to discuss strategies and share experiences with the audience.
Jennifer Tirado, Georges Sanon, Kamesha Hayes, and Cassandra White represented PSC at the second annual Juneteenth 5K Walk on Saturday, June 15 at the Rich Township High School Track in Richton Park. PSC was a sponsor of the event, with all proceeds supporting the USO, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the well-being of individuals serving in the American military and their families.
PSC was co-sponsor of the Juneteenth Celebration with Crete-Monee School District 201-U & Crete's Community Runners Club Association. Thank you to Gabby Diestelmeier for representing the college. Some highlights included a freedom walk, a student-led choir, jazz band performances, and powerful poetry readings. Local historians shared an extensive history of Crete's connection with the Underground Railroad.
Celeste Garcia, Latinx Outreach and Retention Coordinator and Jennica Rodriguez, Director of the PEACE Center, attended the 31st Annual Illinois Latino Conference on Higher Education (ILACHE) Conference at Northern Illinois University on April 26, 2024. This year's theme was “Advocating for Latino/a/x Leadership & Access: Campeones de Equidad.” Guests were able to select from a variety of workshops as well as a Research Symposium.
Dr. Desirée Anderson, Jennica Rodriguez, and Lisa Pickens from PSC attended the White House Power Up Initiative at Malcolm X College. The event brought together professionals from various sectors to discuss initiatives aligning with Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona's Raise the Bar call to action. Panelists from CPS, city colleges, nonprofits, and corporations shared effective strategies for promoting educational equity, particularly for Black students and families. Mayor Brandon Johnson also shared insights from his educational background with attendees. The event showcased citywide initiatives supporting the needs and success of Black students
Summer Hours will be in effect through Friday, August 2, 2024. Year-round, full-time employees who follow the general schedule of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the summer schedule will be as follows:
Office hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Please note: departments that typically remain open after 4:30 p.m. and those with individual schedules may have exceptions to this schedule. Check with your supervisor for details.

Renee Lumpkin and Felicia G. were recognized as an outstanding Tutor Learner Pair at Prairie State College, by Literacy Works. Literacy Works supports adult literacy education and communication equity through its Community Literacy and Clear Language Lab programs.
The Prairie State College (PSC) Forensics team finished the season earning numerous accolades at several tournaments, including the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament in Nevada.
Illinois Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament (Prairie State College) | February 24, 2024 and March 1-2
PSC hosted the Illinois Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament, one of only a few tournaments where two-year and four-year schools compete against one another. Carrington Valentine (Hazel Crest, IL) was a finalist in the Open Division of Informative Speaking (Four-Year Division), earning 6th place. Valentine was also the Two-Year division Champion of the IPDA Debate. Jalen Pia and Miranda Melgoza also competed for PSC.

At the national tournament, Dana Trunnell, PSC Professor of Communication/Coordinator and forensics coach, was honored with the prestigious Collie-Taylor Coach Fellowship Award and recognized as one of the two recipients of the Phi Rho Pi Service Award.

Pages 5-6 list PSC graduates who were both part of DDP and graduated from GSU this year. The entire newsletter contains even more names and pictures of PSC graduates who have gone on to earn honors at GSU, participated in community service programs, etc.
Prairie State College excelled at the STEM Skyway Conference, which took place on Friday, April 19, at Morton College. The competition featured students conducting undergraduate research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Participants presented a poster and authored a research paper outlining their procedures and findings. The event was highly competitive and provided a captivating and educational experience for all attendees.
Berthrand Ewang-Mengalle and Laura Kim clinched first place in Chemistry with their project titled "Using FTIR Spectroscopy to Trace Microplastics in Zebrafish" (Mentored by Dr. Medhat Shaibat).
Lucrese Gomez and Paige Rizzo secured first place in Biology with their project titled "Effect of Soil Composition on Growth Rate" (Mentored by Dr. Aparna Palakodeti).
Additionally, Laura Kim achieved second place in Biology for another project titled "Auditory Environmental Enrichment and Zebrafish" (Mentored by Dr. Angela Hung). Ramon Mendez also participated in the Biology category with his project on "Heavy Metal Toxicity in C. elegans" (Mentored by Dr. Erica Lannan).
Assistant Athletic Director Chris Kuchta received national praise for his story on PSC softball player Colby McDivitt. Kuchta was the 23-24 recipient of the Fred Stabley Sr. writing contest in the College Division.
Almost 400 entries were submitted for consideration and Kuchta's piece received top honors. After Kuchta's piece was written McDivitt also received the NJCAA's Inspirational Athlete of the Year Award. Please check out Kuchta's McDivitt feature below.

Throughout her internship, Melissa collaborated with the team and made significant contributions to social media marketing and internal communication projects, including bringing fresh ideas, strategic insights, and more! She exceeded expectations, and we look forward to witnessing her growth as she continues her education at PSC.
To welcome future Pioneers to the PSC community, the Marketing and Communications, and Recruitment teams distributed celebratory boxes to new students in time for National Decision Day, which occurs annually on May 1.

The Christopher Art Gallery is currently closed and will re-open following the remediation completion of the Main Building.
The Conference Center, which includes the Barnes and Noble Auditorium held 28 events during May with 3 external clients and 24 internal clients. External events included Prairie Hills Elementary School, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Internal-hosted events included a Mental Health Conference, Gracias Mamas, graduation and pinning ceremonies for Opportunity Works, TRIO, Dental Hygiene, Fire Science/EMS/EMT, Physical Therapist
Assistant and Nursing, and a Veteran Stole Ceremony. There was a Wind & Jazz Ensemble concert and an awards ceremony for Athletics. Additionally, there were student club meetings (All Latin Alliance,
Black Student Union, LGBTQ+) and a One Million Degrees Information Session.
Duplication and Support Services, which includes the PSC mailroom, is responsible for digital transfer and production, photocopying, printing, and binding providing additional support to faculty and staff.

During the period of May 20 – June 10, there were 99 requests for duplication orders that totaled 18,066 black and white impressions and 13,399 color impressions.

HVAC Upgrade Replacement
Facilities has begun to work through the final stages of the operational functions of system upgrades. Training for the new system began this month and included several Facility personnel who worked directly with the vendor to walk through the basic operations and troubleshooting functions.

MAC Fire Science
The architect for this project has begun to work on the Master Plan document for this site and will be submitting it to us for review.
Atrium Renovations
Due to an unforeseen hazard that was discovered by the general contractor, the flooring project has been halted. The discovery of black mastic located in the current floor tiles has been identified as asbestos and must be removed completely before the general contractor can resume. The College has begun with remediation.
Facilities and Operations
During the Atrium abatement process, Facilities staff has been relocated to new offices on campus and at the Matteson Area Center. They have also been instructed to make sure that all buildings remain safe from any potential equipment-related accidents that could happen as a result of the movement of personnel.
Athletics experienced continued growth during the previous school year. Men's soccer made our community proud with a valiant effort off the heels of a national championship. The Pioneers spent a good portion of the season ranked No. 1 in the country and qualified for the national tournament.
Men's tennis maintained its standard of qualifying for the national tournament and capturing the Region IV championship.
Women's soccer showed flashes of excellence under new coach Carlos Reyes and will surely improve next season.
Men's basketball won 12 games while women's basketball improved all season under new head coach Tanner Kuehn. Miracle Thomas became the first player in program history to score over 1,000 points for her career.
Softball finished 18-28 and coach Frank Wilkins won his 500th game in the process. Baseball won the most games its won in several seasons hitting the 15-win mark under first-year head coach Dre Gilmore.

The Foundation celebrated PSC graduates at Commencement 2024 with complimentary alumni t-shirts and decals. New alumni had an opportunity to support Foundation scholarships with a PSC-themed tassel keyring in honor of their graduation year, with a donation of $20.24. The Foundation was very pleased with the number of graduates who participated.
128 applications were attempted, and 94 applications were successfully submitted. 75 applicants were offered $16,930.00 in tuition awards and $5,241.71 in Barnes & Noble Bookstore purchases. Additionally, 43 textbooks have been loaned as part of the Foundation’s BookSHARE lending program for a savings of $5,674.61.
The Foundation’s 31st Annual Scholarship Classic Golf Outing was held on Monday, June 3. The day began with the Helicopter Ball Drop -142 golf balls were dropped from the helicopter on the first hole, and the three balls closest to the pin won a prize. Congratulations to Ms. Maria Desmond, who won first place and chose the $300 cash prize and donated it back to the Foundation; Ms. Karen Smith, who won second place and chose an iPad; and Ms. Jeri Bingham, who won third place and received a foursome from Idlewild Country Club. The Foundation again raised more than $25,000 at this event. Special thanks to all of the PSC students and PSC employees who helped make the golf outing a success!
During 2024, the Foundation will sponsor 78 Denim Days. For a $1 donation each day, employees can wear denim to work. All employees who pay or pledge to pay at least $78 in 2024 will receive a special collector’s pin and a desktop pin display, stating they are changing lives by supporting student scholarships.
Join the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra and other guest performers for an evening of music on the steps of the Flossmoor Public Library. On July 25, reconnect with neighbors, make new friends, and come together to celebrate the arts. Prairie State College is a sponsor of this free event.

After 24 years at Prairie State College and over four decades in higher education, Elighie Wilson III is entering retirement.
Elighie leaves a lasting legacy of leadership, mentorship, and dedication to academic advancement. He has been serving PSC since August of 2000 in various roles beginning as a tenure-track Professor in Communications. Wilson was the Dean of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Department Chair, Coordinator of Faculty Development, and Communication Program Coordinator. He has also served as the Co-Director of the Speech Team and Summer High School Speech Workshop, demonstrating his commitment to student development inside and outside the classroom.
Elighie’s impact on the faculty, students, and staff was immeasurable. We wish you all the happiness on your upcoming journey. You will be missed!
