From March 16-19, Dr. Little, Dr. Anderson, Juanita Wyatt, and PEACE Center Director Jennica Rodriguez attended the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) National Conference in New Orleans. They had the opportunity to choose from a wide range of workshops, focusing on topics such as intentional student service through advising and innovative programming ideas. The conference featured speakers from across the country, many of whom provided insightful updates on the current state of higher education. These speakers also offered valuable suggestions on how to continue supporting students in the face of recent challenges.
On March 18, the PEACE Center Coordinator, Celeste Garcia, hosted an event in honor of Women's History Month for allied health majors to come and get the "scoop" on working in those fields as women and as recent PSC alumni of the Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Surgical Tech Programs. Open to all students, this event allowed current PSC students to learn more about what their academic journeys may look like for those specific programs/fields. Our panelists shared information regarding their application process into the programs, how they overcame obstacles once in those selective admissions programs, and what their experience has been like now in their fields of choice. As a treat, students were also given a "scoop" of ice cream to go along with the scoop of information they received at the event.
In celebration of Arab American History Month, the PEACE Center hosted a screening of the PBS Film "Arab Americans." One of the work-study students, Adriana Cabrera of the PEACE Center, gave a short presentation highlighting important information about the contributions of Arab Americans in the United States. Afterwards, attendees sampled typical Arab American foods such as hummus and tabbouleh salad.
On Friday, April 11, PEACE Center staff attended the annual ILACHE (Illinois Latino Council on Higher Education) Conference at Governors State University. The event featured a keynote presentation by Juan Gonzalez, broadcast journalist and investigative reporter, who explored the connections between current political climates and historical advocacy movements for Latino communities. Guest speakers shared best practices and innovative ideas for addressing challenges in higher education today, particularly in serving Latinx students, regardless of whether institutions are HSI-designated. Additionally, Celeste Garcia participated in the Undocumented Student Liaison Spring Meeting, which was held as part of the ILACHE conference for Illinois Undocumented Liaisons.
The PEACE Center partnered with the Office of Financial Aid to host the inaugural "Finish Line to FAFSA" event, with approximately 36 students registering and attending. Upon arrival, students checked in and met with one of three financial aid representatives, who provided updates on the status of their 2025-2026 FAFSA applications and advised if any edits were needed. Students who required assistance with completing their 2025-2026 applications received support, including bilingual help from Celeste Garcia. After completing their check-in or application, students were treated to walking tacos.
In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the PEACE Center hosted an event featuring representatives from multiple organizations who shared valuable resources with our students. Celeste Angulo from Anew also led a presentation on healthy relationships and warning signs to watch for.
