Our team is also reviewing floor map designs to ensure accuracy before proceeding with the installation.
President Dr. Michael D. Anthony joined other higher education leaders on Chicago Tonight to speak out against federal funding cuts to Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). The U.S. Department of Education's decision to cut grants to HSIs, PBIs, and others has sparked strong pushback from Illinois colleges, which argue these designations reflect the communities they serve - not racial quotas. Thank you to everyone who tuned in for this important discussion. If you missed it, you can watch the full segment below.
Dr. Anthony and Dr. Jeri Bingham, along with leadership from Chicago State University, recently met with Democratic congressional aides in the offices of Congressman Steny Hoyer (MD) and Senator Tammy Duckworth (IL) to discuss federal funding for Minority Serving Institutions, with a focus on Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). Both offices expressed strong support for PBIs and affirmed their commitment to advancing our initiatives and ensuring these institutions remain a priority in Congress.
Congresswoman Robin Kelly extended a special invitation to Dr. Anthony to represent Prairie State College on a distinguished panel held on Capitol Hill during Congressional Black Caucus Week in Washington, D.C. The event brought together Democratic and Republican legislators to engage with presidents of Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs), including Prairie State College, Medgar Evers College, and Prince George’s Community College.
Recently, Prairie State College showed its support at Silver Cross Hospital’s Fall Fiesta fundraiser at Rancho Los Guzman in Joliet. President Dr. Michael D. Anthony, Director of Nursing Antigone Kokalias, and Vice President for External Affairs Dr. Jeri Bingham participated in the evening’s festivities, featuring salsa dancing, horses, and a strong community spirit.
Prairie State College representatives attended Chicago State University’s 6th Annual 1stGEN Scholarship Gala: Determined on Friday, September 26, 2025, at The Geraghty. Dr. Isaiah Allen, Director of TRIO Upward Bound; Yvette McGhee, Assistant Dean; and Oshunda Carpenter Williams, Assistant Director of Financial Aid, represented PSC at the event.
Presented by Northern Trust, the gala supports scholarships that reduce financial barriers for first-generation students and advances CSU’s mission of educational equity as Illinois’ only four-year Predominantly Black Institution.
You are invited to attend the Annual Benefits & Wellness Fair as part of the 2026 Plan Year Open Enrollment, which runs from October 7 through October 17. The fair will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Proven IT Conference Center.

This year’s Student Orientation was a great success. In early August, new students came to campus to explore all that PSC has to offer. The program featured information sessions on D2L, student organizations, library services, and more. Students also received giveaways, were able to get their PSC IDs, and shared lunch together on campus.
Special thanks to the Student Engagement team in the Division of Student Affairs - and to Juanita Wyatt and Amie Bernstein Clark - for their leadership in organizing this event, along with everyone who contributed to its success.
On Friday, August 29, we said “see you later” to our incredible TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) team during a special Lunch & Learn session. Although the TRIO SSS grant at PSC is ending, this is a temporary pause—not a farewell. We fully intend to reapply for the grant when the opportunity arises and look forward to bringing this impactful program back in the future. Since its inception, TRIO SSS has provided essential academic, personal, and career support to first-generation college students, low-income students, and students with disabilities. Through personalized advising, tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment activities, the program has supported hundreds of PSC students in achieving their academic goals - increasing retention, completion, and overall student success. We are deeply grateful for the dedication of our TRIO SSS team and the trust our students have placed in the program over the years. A special thanks to Dr. Desirée Anderson, Dr. Isaiah Allen, Dr. Anthony, and Dr. Anita Moore-Bohannon for sharing their reflections and reinforcing the importance of programs like TRIO in supporting student success.

Prairie State College (PSC) and Wind Creek Chicago Southland launched The Prairie State College Art Showcase at Wind Creek, a new rotating exhibition highlighting local artists, including PSC students and alums. The exhibit opened on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Wind Creek’s newest location in East Hazel Crest, Illinois, with the unveiling of original works by inaugural featured artist Chidera Onyeizeh of Richton Park.
Onyeizeh is a PSC alumnus and recent graduate of Governors State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Printmaking. His work, currently on display at Wind Creek, blends linoleum block printing and screen printing (serigraphy), enhanced with colored pencil to build intricate light, shadow, and texture. Typography features prominently, operating both as a visual device and a conduit for dialogue between subject and viewer. Influenced by Pop Art, Onyeizeh draws from advertising, comic books, and everyday life to create layered, dynamic compositions.
The PSC–Wind Creek partnership will feature new artists every two months, showcasing six artists annually. Artwork is available for purchase, with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting the artists. The exhibition at Wind Creek is curated by Javier Chavira, director of PSC’s Christopher Art Gallery.
The Conference Center, which includes the Barnes and Noble College Auditorium, held 10 external events with 650 attendees, and 25 internal events with 1600 attendees during the months of July and August 2025. External events and clients included Leaders for Tomorrow, SEIU,CAAN Graduation and others.

Dental Clinic Upgrade
Construction has begun for the new vacuum and compressed air units that are being added to the current lab spaces. Coring of the floor has been completed and we are scheduled to have the new concrete poured the week of 8/18/25. Once complete, the remaining lab work will consist of replacing the tile that was removed in each of the labs and some piping work in the basement. Expected completion of this project, the week of 8/18/25.
Replacement of Generators
Awang an update from the Capital Development Board (CDB) on project status and potential start date. This is a CDB-funded project.
HVAC Upgrade Replacement
As a direct result of some of the adjustments made by our HVAC technician and manager of facilities, we have been able to reduce the number of unit outages tremendously this summer. We are still working to continue to stabilize the system and have it run at its optimal rate of efficiency. This is an ongoing process.
Roof Replacements
Awaiting final approval of the latest design changes that were requested by CDB are at the 95% stage. We have also confirmed with the A&E firm SPC that it looks like this project won’t begin until spring of 2026. This is a direct result of the delays from CDB with the designs. In the meantime, we will get three quotes to patch-up the problems on the north end of the K-Building which houses the music and art classes. This building is by far the worse and these repairs should hold us over until the spring 2026.
We are proud to share that Stephenie Lowe, Director of Purchasing at Prairie State College, was recently featured by E&I Cooperative Services. When Chris DeFonseka stepped onto the Prairie State College campus in February 1976, just days after arriving from Sri Lanka, it marked the beginning of a journey that would carry him through academia and into a long career in digital forensics. This past April, he retired and recently returned to PSC, where it all began. Looking back, he remembers those first days vividly.
“I literally stepped from the plane to Prairie State College,” he recalled. “Everybody I met was so nice, so friendly and so welcoming. I still have those wonderful memories.”
Chris chose PSC because of its close proximity to family in Park Forest, which allowed him to commute and save money. While here, he took classes in business law, humanities, and comparative religions. His time on campus even caught the attention of the student newspaper, which profiled his experience as an international student.
In 1977, Chris transferred from PSC to the University of New Orleans to complete his bachelor’s degree in business administration. That foundation launched a career that eventually took him to the Nevada Attorney General’s Office, where he spent 24 years as a digital forensic analyst embedded with an FBI task force. Before that, he worked at Packard Bell until 1991.
When Chris returned to PSC recently, he reflected on the role the college played in his life. “I had a very enjoyable time and made lots of friends. The teachers were fantastic and always willing to help. Prairie State was the grounding I needed for the future I’m enjoying now.”
This month’s Student Spotlight shines on Faith Albert, the current Class President of the Student Chapter of the American Dental Hygienists' Association (SADHA), nominated by Desiree Schierholz for her outstanding dedication to the Dental Hygiene Program. Faith has gone above and beyond in her role by taking the lead in organizing multiple fundraising events to support her class’s upcoming board review.
Desiree shared, "Beyond her leadership in fundraising, Faith is always the first to volunteer when help is needed. She leads by example, showing professionalism, teamwork, and a genuine care for her peers. Her dedication reflects the values of the dental hygiene profession and has had a lasting impact on both her classmates and the program as a whole."
Judge Iesha Gray, Presiding Judge of the Restorative Justice Community Court (RJCC), recently presented a Certificate of Completion to Prairie State College’s Workforce Development and Community Education (WDCE) team in recognition as an education and training provider through the Opportunity Works program.
Opportunity Works provides training, educational resources, and supportive services to justice-impacted individuals, helping them build pathways to education, employment, and long-term success. The certificate highlights PSC’s continued commitment to fostering second-chance opportunities through strong community partnerships like RJCC.
On August 26, Professor Brian Donovan received the Pioneer Award in recognition of his dedication, innovation, and unwavering commitment to student success since joining Prairie State College in 2009. Professor Donovan played a pivotal role in securing a National Science Foundation grant, helping to elevate the college’s profile and expand opportunities for students in computer information science and technology. He continues to lead by developing new courses and certificate programs in high-demand areas like network cybersecurity, ensuring our programs stay aligned with industry needs and student interests.
His students consistently praise his mentorship for inspiring confidence, shaping career goals, and fostering lifelong learning. Even while facing personal challenges this year, Professor Donovan’s resilience and passion for his students have remained steadfast.
