January 2022 Newsletter

Message from The President

Hello Colleagues,

We are excited to begin another semester at Prairie State College! A new semester means new beginnings and new opportunities to improve ourselves and the world around us. While it’s not starting exactly how it was planned, we will work together to make sure our students have the best possible experience.

PSC is still committed to keeping the community safe, which is why we decided to deliver the first two weeks of the semester virtually. We also have a policy which allows supervisors to staff their office as safely as possible given the recommendations of local and regional health officials. Nothing is more important than the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. We realize it presents challenges, but I have no doubt we will all put forth our best effort and rise to meet our students’ needs.

I am thankful for the commitment each and every one of you continues to give the college during these trying times.
Your work is the backbone of the college and it does not go unnoticed.

Here’s to another great semester!

Dr. Michael D. Anthony

Lunch with the President:
Dr. Anthony will continue his weekly Lunch with the President in February. The activity was a tremendous success in the fall allowing students the opportunity to grab a bite to eat while chatting with the President about their own needs and the happenings of PSC.

Foundation Scholarships for Textbooks Available:

Please direct students who express a textbook need, not covered by the $200 book voucher, to complete a Foundation scholarship application. Books loaned through the Foundation's BookSHARE program are considered a scholarship award because there is a monetary value associated with the books loaned. With that said, for Foundation auditing purposes, we must be able to provide documentation of a completed application for any qualifying student who receives an award. Please contact Susan Sebastian at ssebastian@prairiestate.edu with any questions. Thank you for helping the Foundation serve PSC students!

The Foundation accepts donations of school supplies for students on a regular basis so we have them on hand when students need them. Feel free to contact Kathy Kane (kkane@prairiestate.edu) to see what supplies are needed and/or to arrange to drop off donations.

Annual Audit:

The Foundation welcomed auditors from GWA on campus the week of January 10 and is looking forward to presenting the results to the Investment & Finance Committee as soon as they are ready.

The Foundation is holding its annual Economic Forecast Breakfast in person this year on Fri., April 1 at Olympia Fields Country Club. Breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. and our speaker will once again be Mr. Charles L. Evans, President & CEO, of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Jeans Days 2022:
The Foundation sent out the list of 78 jeans days that have been planned for 2022. The list of dates will soon be available on the PSC intranet—do not miss your opportunity to support student scholarships by wearing jeans.

Featured Student (Maria):
The Foundation and its scholarship reviewers are often privy to information that other employees do not hear about the students they support day in and day out. We want to share this information so you can see into our students’ lives and backgrounds and be as inspired by their gratitude and dedication as we are. Maria shared the following in her spring application:

The reason why I have financial need is because I do not work much. I only work two days a week to help to pay my bills which include school tuition payments, books and school supplies. Without my parents' help I wouldn't be able to pay them. I currently look for scrap pallets and sell them for $1-$3 per pallet.

I applied for DACA last January, but unfortunately granting status has been determined to be illegal. Unfortunately, I still had to pay for the DACA process so I lost that money. I was recently admitted to the hospital because of my mental health. I have been so stressed with school and money I would cry myself to sleep. I did not want to go to the hospital, because I don't have insurance and now I have bills that I don't know how I am going to deal with.

I know there is always something bright waiting for me. I just have to keep pushing. My biggest goal in life is to someday help people the way I have been helped. I still remember when I was a little girl, an older lady would give us gifts for Christmas and that would brighten my days. I want to see that same smile one day by helping others in need. I want to make my parents proud and most of all myself, because I know I have went through has been a really tough road.
