November/December 2023 Newsletter

Message from the President:

PSC Pioneers -

We are in the final stretch of the fall semester, and I want to encourage you all to keep pushing forward. Whether you are faculty, staff, manager, or administrator, your role is essential in keeping our college running smoothly. Let’s keep at it and make these last few weeks count.

I’m pleased with the turnout for our recent Open House. Thanks to Beth Wyack and Gabby Diestelmeier for leading this effort and all who helped make it a success. The energy and enthusiasm shown by our faculty and staff when promoting PSC fills me with pride. We have so much to offer our community. Don’t hesitate to continue encouraging folks to start or continue their educational journey with us.

Our students consistently uphold our values in the classroom, community, and on the field. Most recently, our dental hygiene students visited Andrew High School to talk about the dangers of vaping, while our men’s soccer team earned another Regional Championship, and went on to win in the first round of the National Tournament in Tucson. These accomplishments reflect our collective pride, dedication, and ongoing efforts to enhance our institution.

As I conclude, there is one more thing I’d like to emphasize. Let’s ensure we show kindness and compassion to one another, especially during the holidays, as we never know what others may be going through. The world is full of fear, war, and challenges here and abroad. A little extra kindness can make all the difference, and I thank you in advance for taking care of yourself and one another.

#WeArePSC,

Dr. Anthony

National Coalition of Predominantly Black Institutions of Higher Education Fly-In Meeting

President Anthony, VP Bingham, and VP Little traveled to Washington, D.C., as part of the National Coalition of Predominantly Black Institutions, joining leaders from Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) across the country for a PBI Fly-in. PSC joined Chicago State University, Malcolm X College, Olive Harvey College, and other colleges from New York, New Jersey, and Maryland.

PSC met with key legislators during the visit, including U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth and U.S. Representative Jonathan Jackson. Additionally, they engaged with the legislative aides for U.S. Senator Cory Booker, U.S. Representative Michael Quigley, and others. On the second day, the PBI Coalition met with U.S. Department of Education leaders.

First Generation Celebration

National First-Generation Day celebrates those who are the first in their families to pursue a four-year undergraduate degree in the US. It is held on November 8 to honor the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. To mark the occasion, student-focused stations were set up in the Atrium. The "First Gen Zen" station offered breakfast, a plant potting activity, DIY hand scrubs, and mental wellness information. Students also received boxed lunches and t-shirts with the slogan "Barrier Breaker, Game Changer, History Maker, Trailblazer, First Generation." We want to thank the First Gen alums, faculty, and staff who served as mentors and Juanita Wyatt for leading this effort.

Veterans Day Ceremony

On Friday, November 10, Prairie State College held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony, organized by the Office of Military Student Affairs, to honor local and student veterans. The event began with the Presenting of the Colors by Bloom Township High School NJROTC. Dr. Bernard Little delivered a welcoming speech, followed by Georges Sanon, Military Student Affairs Office Coordinator. The ceremony focused on expressing gratitude to the veterans who have courageously defended our democracy, values, and freedom around the world. Special guests CWO Melissa Farmer Hill and keynote speaker Col. Damon Arnold highlighted the 75th anniversary of the full integration of women in the Armed Forces. Dr. Desirée Anderson presented the Outstanding Supporter of the Office of Military Student Affairs award to the City of Chicago Heights, and special recognition was given to World War II Navy Veteran James "Judge" Williams.

Fall 2023 Open House

The Fall Open House on November 11 was a success! Community members enjoyed activities such as early childhood classroom demonstrations, a special Veterans Day tribute at the library, interactive photo opportunities with Parker, and viewing the Mobile Welding Training Truck. The event also featured raffles, entertainment from Power 92 Chicago's radio host Money Maha and Soul 106.3 radio host Lady Red, and a unique musical performance by the Financial Aid department. Check out the link below to view it!

Transfer Fair: PICU

On November 6, PSC hosted more than 30 college representatives in the Atrium to assist students in identifying Bachelor's degree programs, engaging with university admissions officers, and gaining insight into course planning, transfer options, and scholarship opportunities—many thanks to Sarah Hein for leading his effort.

Thanks for Giving 2023

The Prairie State College Foundation has initiated a new campaign featuring scholarship recipients, showcasing their stories through a series of emails and poster displays across the main campus. Thanks to the Pathway Grant, PSC has acquired a "SimRig® The Ambulance Trainer" to improve students' learning experiences and advance EMS education programs through hands-on simulation. This specialized equipment replicates a real ambulance, enabling EMS students to practice proper procedures. Its compact design allows students to experience the challenges of working in a confined space, preparing them for real-life situations. The simulation is located at the Matteson Area Center (MAC).

Building Partnerships

Prairie State College hosted a hybrid mini-conference on November 17 to strengthen ties with local high schools. PSC faculty members met with educators from Bloom, Bloom Trail, Crete-Monee, Homewood-Flossmoor, and Rich Township. The event featured presentations by PSC Library faculty members Diane Anderson, Thane Montaner, and Valerie Moore on information literacy and revising students' research approaches. English Professor Jessica Gravely showcased new student writing evaluation tools, while Adjunct Professor Cherise Stone-Thompson discussed peer feedback strategies. Lastly, English Professor Jason Evans discussed ChatGPT-related policies at PSC and the participating high schools.

Employee News

Quoted: Inside Higher Ed Article

Dr. Desirée Anderson, Dean of Equity and Inclusion, was quoted in a recent Insider Higher Ed article: New Barriers for Community Colleges Community

“We’ll see the biggest impact [from the end of affirmative action] in the transfer process. The lack of race-conscious admissions policies within four-year universities diminish opportunities for our students … a lot of our [previous] transfer opportunities were designed to create pathways for first-generation students, students of color and other students historically excluded from higher education … and those opportunities are going away. That transfer pipeline is now a hurdle.”

Career Services Team

Terri Eakins and Mary Fitzpatrick from Career Services completed the Career Launch Certified Coaching Training. They are now certified to use the Career Launch Academy assessment and workbook with students. During Career Development week from November 13-16, students were encouraged to submit elevator pitch videos, take professional headshots for Handshake and LinkedIn, and explore VR career scenarios. Check out the elevator pitch video linked below.

Congratulations, Jennica!

Jennica Rodriguez, Director of the PEACE (Pride Equity Access Cultural Exchange) Center, and husband Ricardo, are excited to announce the arrival of their daughter, Balbina, on November 6, 2023. Student Spotlight

Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference

PSC students participated in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference, hosted by Moraine Valley Community College. The event featured writing competitions, workshops, and opportunities to connect with professional writers. This year, PSC stood out, with three of our students emerging as winners, the most among all the colleges in the conference.

Daniel Carbaugh claimed the top spot in the fiction category with his story "The Call," which impressed the judges to the extent that they expressed interest in publishing it in The Write City Review, a publication by the Chicago Writers Association. Tegan Baez secured first place in the poetry competition with her prose poem "Meal Prep." Rodolpho Meza achieved second place in the drama/screenplay category with his play "Love, Melody.”

PSC Model United Nations Team

The PSC Model United Nations Team has returned from the American Model United Nations Conference competition held November 18-21 in Chicago. Our team role played representatives of the United Republic of Tanzania. Team members were Mariela Nieves, Fiel Wilson, Samuel Jouf, and Eduardo Nunez.

( Use the drop-down arrow for more.)

Ms. Nieves served on the Economic Commission for Africa. During the conference, Ms. Nieves worked with representatives from other African countries to draft and approve a report focusing on “Women’s economic empowerment: boosting women’s entrepreneurship in Africa.”

Mr. Wilson served on the United Nations General Assembly First Committee (Disarmament and International Security). Mr. Wilson negotiated with other countries to develop, debate and pass resolutions relating to “the prohibition of the development, production and stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction.

Mr. Jouf served on the United Nations General Assembly Second Committee (Economic and Financial). In this committee, Mr. Jouf negotiated and debated resolutions relating to ensuring “access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.”

Mr. Nunes served on the United Nations Plenary Committee (Concurrent) in which he debated resolutions relating to “international cooperation on humanitarian assistance in the field of natural disasters, from relief to development.”

The students prepared by conducting research on The United Republic of Tanzania and the individual committee topics. After completing the research, they then drafted and debated resolutions. Preparation also included participating in a United Nations Security Council simulation held at Purdue Northwest University.

Prairie State College has secured a country to represent at the 2024 American Model United Nations. Prairie State College will represent the Dominican Republic.
