Time Commitment: 11-19 hrs/week
The SFC recommends the Student Incidental and Student Building Fees for the following fiscal year, while handling any current fiscal year needs that arise. These fees fund 32 different Fee Funded Areas (FFAs). The Resource Centers, Campus Rec, and Student Activities and Leadership Programs (SALP), are just a few examples of FFAs. The Student Fee Committee is a part of greater ASPSU and all members are also senators, but the SFC does the majority of the work separately.
The first few weeks in SFC feel really daunting because there is so much new information to learn, but just stick with it because everyone is starting at the same point. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and if there are new members, be welcoming and helpful and remember how much there was to learn when you started. Expect that there will be challenges throughout the year, but there will always be ways to creatively solve those problems, so don't get discouraged!
Consistent, open, and friendly communication is essential. Show up on a regular basis to make sure that the committee has quorum; and if you are not able to make it, be sure to communicate that to the rest of the committee. Make the most informed, consistent, and thoughtful decisions that you can. Everyone has their own personal lives and challenges, but do your best to take care of yourself so you are prepared to show up for the SFC and for the student body. Communicate whenever you are having challenges so that the leadership can work with you to find a solution.
Above all, remember how important this work is to your colleagues, and to the greater Portland State Community. Take the work seriously, but also remember that this is a learning experience that will help us become better leaders in the future.
